Sam stared at his beer and dared not turn his head to look at Rosie. She was laughing with some hobbits at the bar; Sam could hear it, and his heart pondered wildly. „Don't you dare is, Obo Farfoot,“ he murmured. „Stop flirting with her like that. It's her birthday today.“
Frodo chuckled silently. „So, why don't you go over, Sam? I know you've even got a gift for her.“
Sam blushed. „Where do you know this from, Master Frodo?“
„I saw you at the farmer's market yesterday. You were talking with Adalheit Bracegirdle; everyone knows she is very talented at fancy work. What did you get for Rosie? Some handmade lace or a scarf?“
Shaking his head, Sam kneaded his fingers. „A tea cozy,“ he whispered.
„Oh!“ Frodo blinked, confused. „What's this?“
„You put it over your teapot, and it will keep the tea warm.“ Sam shrugged, finally dared a glance at the young hobbit girl behind the bar. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, and he must have lost his mind to think he could win her heart with such a ridiculous gift. „It's getting late; I guess I need to go.“
Laughing, Frodo grabbed his arm to hold him back. „Don't be silly, Sam. The way she smiles every time you enter the 'Prancing Pony' tells volumes. She's only waiting for you to make the first step.“
„You think so?“ Some hope was flickering up in Sam's eyes. „I just wish I had bought some colorful ribbons instead of this absurd tea cozy. I am such a clumsy hobbit.“
„I'm sure she doesn't care. And I have heard that she loves tea. So, what are you waiting for?“
