Jim closed his eyes as Jack and Fred did; they were told to find some rest, and they obeyed because it was all they could do at the moment. But none of them would be able to sleep. The thoughts were racing.

Since he had been a little boy, he had dreamed about flying to the moon, and now he was here, only a few hundred miles away. When he looked out of the little window of the space-capsule, it felt as if he only had to stretch out his hand to touch it.

Then he thought about Marilyn and the children, and for a split of a second, he wondered if all this had been worth it. He knew, down at earth so many smart people were desperately working to find a way out of their state of emergency. Of course, he tried to be confident. As the commander of this mission, this was what everyone expected from him. But deep inside he felt like a captain of a ship which was lost in a storm; he would stand upright at the rudder until the end, and he would go down with his ship.

Only some miles away from his destination.
