Title: The Endless Cosmic Space
Characters: Jean-Luc Picard
Prompt: Yahtzee / picture of the space
Words: 246
:::
Being retired was not that bad; he finally found some time for all the things he loved but never had been able to enjoy while still being a member of the Starfleet. But while walking through his vineyard this morning, only accompanied by Number One, his dog, Jean-Luc Picard let his mind wander back.
Sometimes, he missed the old times. The endless cosmic space, the Enterprise, the crew, and, first of all, Data. When he first met his chief operations officer, he had only seen an android, a brilliant one, that could react much smarter and much quicker than any human could.
He had learned soon enough how wrong he was. Data was self-aware, sapient, and sentient, and over the years, he turned out to be not only his second officer and confidant but also his friend. As a captain of a spaceship like the Enterprise, you don't have many friends because you are responsible for the whole team. With Data, it had always been different.
But Data was gone. He sacrificed himself to save the ship, which had been the only home he had ever known, and to save his captain. After his death, life had never been the same again.
Picard suddenly stopped, pulling his coat closer around him. The sun had vanished behind some clouds; it was getting cold. Number one looked at him questioningly and whined. Reassuring, Picard bent down to pet his ears. „It's okay, old boy,“ he said, „let's go home.“
