Nyota Uhura cringed inwardly though she was smiling. It was hard to let the man she loved so much go, not knowing if he would come back again. One last fleetingly kiss, and she could read it in his calm, dark eyes that he was barely aware of it. His brilliant mind was already preparing for his dangerous mission; there was no room for anything else.
Then he was gone, and she turned back to her control panel. Being together with a special guy like him for almost a year already had taught her that it was better to keep her feelings for herself. He would not understand her angst like it sometimes felt that he didn't understand her love.
Though he was only half a Vulkan, he had learned early enough to put logic over emotions. In the world he was grown up, feelings were weakness. The only one who was ever emotionally close to him as a child had been his human mother. He had respected, adored, loved her.
Not being able to save her when his whole planet got devoured by an artificial black hole must have been almost unbearable for him. But even then, he had only allowed her a short moment to hold him before he turned away with a stony face, continuing with his work.
Sometimes, when she was alone in her quarter, Uhura thought about how it would be to leave him; maybe she would get over it one day, being open for another, more healthy relationship. But then: no man she had ever met, and she had met some of them at the academy, smart, good looking, funny, and openly flirting with her, had ever made her feel like he could. The first moment she saw him, she had lost her heart. And there was no way that she would ever get it back in one piece.
