Title: He never wanted to be a hero
Character: Tommy Saunders
Wordcount: 100
Finished: January 2018

Gasping for air, Tommy was startled out of his sleep; he needed a moment to realize that he was at home, lying in his bed, and that the cries and the droning in his head were just the aftermaths of another nightmare.

The marathon and everything that had happened on April 15, a day that started with laughter, fun, and triumph, were already four months ago. Finally, Boston began to shake off the shock and move on.

Back to normality. Not for him, though. The horror he had seen would follow him for the rest of his life.

After the court decision, they decided to transfer him to prison as quickly as possible for his safety. He didn't care; he had listened to the sentence unaffectedly. 10 Years! Because he had killed a man.

His lawyer had talked about fateful circumstances and said that he hadn't been in his right mind when he decided to visit Jacob Bonanos. The control tower operator in the evening when his world was broken down.

His wife: dead. His daughter: dead. His unborn grandchild: dead. Together with about 100 other people.

He had felt the eyes of most of the observers in the courtroom resting on him. Full of hate, full of sympathy, full of secret admiration. Some people hated him because he had killed an innocent man, a husband, a father. Some seemed to forgive him, pretended to understand his desperation and his deep grief, and talked about an emotional reaction he hadn't been able to control. And some called it poetic justice and looked up to him because he had refused to accept the compensation the flight company offered all families who had lost a loved one.

Feeling worn out, he closed his eyes and rested his head against the cold side window of the police car.

No one had tried to understand what had tormented him. What kept him awake all night. What he couldn't get out of his head. He didn't need any money or pity. Only three simple words. He had begged for them more than once, but no one had listened to him.

Three words, and maybe everything would have taken a different direction.

I am sorry!

„So, you got the sports scholarship from the University of Michigan? When do you plan to tell me?“

Stan smirked when Stokely stepped closer. „Hard to keep anything secret from you.“

Annoyed, the girl stared at him. „Hey, you don't need to treat me like an idiot. We always knew that it wouldn't last forever with us. You are a football player with all your heart; of course, you must grab this chance. That's okay.“

Stan winced visibly. „You see it that way? Is breaking up after graduation so easy for you?“

„Well, what do you expect? That I am bursting into tears? Sorry, but that's not me.“

„I know.“ Stan stretched out his hand, touching her face. „You are different from every girl I've dated before. Maybe this is why I enjoy it so much more to hang around with you. And I wouldn't mind when it lasts.“

„Well, but that's not very realistic when you go to Michigan.“ Stokely stepped back from him. „Better not to start grabbing for the stars when you know that your dream never can come true.“

Stan smiled slightly. „What if I decide not to accept the scholarship? We could go to Columbus together. Would this be an option for you?“

„You can't be serious! I would never let it happen that you ruin your career because of me!“

„To be honest, it's not only because of you. I have been thinking about it for a while already. Football has affected my life since I can remember. Already as a child, I went to the games with my dad; he was my first coach. He demanded a lot, was hard to satisfy. But there were these sparkles in his eyes he could never hide when I managed a complicated move, and I knew that he was proud of me.“

Stan noticed the rising interest in Stokely's eyes and grabbed for her hand. „He died when I was twelve, and it would have felt like a betrayal to stop working on my career. I never put it in question.

Until... you know... this alien thing, it has changed a lot. I started thinking about my life and how I want to spend the rest of it. Maybe it is time for something new. I could visit a city college or simply work at a record shop. I love music, you know; football is not all.

Honestly, I still don't know where the road will take me, but I would like to find it out together with you.“ He pulled her closer. "My dad would have liked you; he loved Football, but he always told me that a down-to-earth, smart woman is more worthy than the most pretty cheerleaders."

Title: Unexpected news
Character: Delilah Profitt, Casey Connor
Word Count: 478
Prompt: unexpected
Finished: 03.05.2022

To notice tears in Delilah's eyes was more than strange. „What's happened,“ Casey asked. „David Letterman canceled the interview on Saturday?“

Tears started to flow. „I am pregnant!“

„Oh. Woah.“ This was indeed unexpected. „Who is the dad?“

„This asshole!“ She sniffed. „Gabe. When I told him, all he said was that he's not willing to ruin his career for a baby.“

Casey smirked; well, maybe this was not a surprise. Delilah should have known better and not only date him because he was a famous football star. But that was so her; she would do all to stand in the center of the interest, at least for a while. Who, if not him, knew this best? Delilah had made him play the hero after the alien incident; she had even convinced him that pretending that they were in love would mean even more fame and money for both of them.

What a ridiculous idea, but thinking of his future, maybe going to a private photo school one day instead of a city college, had made him agree. He had regretted this decision soon, but Delilah hadn't been willing to stop as long as the media were still so interested in their story.

But now... Casey chewed at his bottom lip. „Well, I guess this means that we can't continue with our show for the media anymore,“ he murmured. "We should call Letterman, cancel the interview. It's over."

Delilah looked at him with her eyes wide open. „Do you know what you are talking about? They will ask for high compensation when we cancel so short notice. That's impossible.“

„Impossible it will be to tell the world that I am your baby's dad. At the latest, when it is born, we can't hide the truth any longer.“ Casey put his arm around her shoulder when she started trembling all over. „Hey, it was only a matter of time anyway; we both knew that we couldn't go on like that forever.“

She breathed in shakingly. „But I am so scared,“ she admitted. „Suddenly, my whole life is turned around, and I don't know what to do against it.“

„Oh, c'mon. So much self-pity? That's not you. You always find a way finally to get what you want. This is only a tiny interlude that won't stop you from going your way.“

„Thanks.“ A faint smile sneaked on her face. „I almost wish our love story would be more than just a fake, and you would be the baby's father.“

Slightly frowning, Casey let her go; this went in the wrong direction. The last he wanted was to raise false hopes. „Think twice, Del, the former geek from school and the cheerleader queen? This only works well in cheesy comedies. But I can be your friend, always there when you need a shoulder to lean on.“

Zeke didn't hide his grin when Casey stepped into the hospital's room. „Hey, what are you doing here?“

„Mr. Furlong asked me to bring you some homework,“ Casey explained, pulling a ring binder out of his backpack. „He says graduation is coming closer, and you shouldn't fall behind too much.“

„Oh, get it. Good old Furlong. And what's in this box?“

Suddenly Casey looked slightly embarrassed. „It's nothing!“

„Doesn't look like nothing. C'mon, and tell me about the dark secret. Lying in a hospital for two weeks is pretty boring; I can need some distraction.“

„No dark secrets, sorry.“ Casey smirked. „Just apple tart. Homemade. When I told my mom that I am visiting a sick classmate after school, she told me to bring you a piece of it.“

Zeke looked at him flabbergasted. „She did what? Why?“

„She is like that!“ Casey shrugged. „Thinks, a good piece of cake can cure everything. Sorry, it's ridiculous. I guess I should go now.“

„Not with the tart,“ Zeke held him back when he hastily turned to the door. „It smells delicious. But maybe, if you keep me some more company, I am willing to share.“
