Feeling the last bit of energy leaving his body, Bode dropped onto his bunk in the bedroom of the prisoners and squeezed his eyes shut. He had known that working for the firefighters in his hometown wouldn't be a picnic. To many memories, and the relationship with his father complicated. But the knowledge of his mom's disease had let him stay anyway.
He hadn't been prepared for a day like this, though. The car accident, two young people, brother and sister, in serious trouble, had taken him back to the day years ago, when his life had been turned around in a split of a second. His sister died in a burning car while he was able to escape. His father had never been able to forgive him, and the first slow steps of rapprochement they had made during the last weeks were forgotten today when they both stood on the bridge, staring at the damaged car that had crashed through the guard railing.
His father not willing to lose the lives of both young people, though Bode agreed with the captain of his team. It was a better option to save the girl first, though it could mean her brother's death. He had tried to talk with his father, but he had stared at him with these eyes full of hate, like back then, when he came home from the hospital, before pushing him away. „I won't let it happen,“ his father had hissed, his voice rough. „Not again. These parents will not lose one of their children today.“
Bode opened his eyes again, staring at the ceiling over him. He had done what needed to be done. Risking his own life to stop his father from risking his. But was this enough? Would it ever be enough to earn back his father's love?
