Title: The Oxford Dictionary
Characters: James Murray
Prompt: Picture - Library (Fill 3)
Prompt: History
Word Count: 200
Finished: 12.03.2020
:::
James Murray stopped at the big doors leading to the library's main hall. What a sight. Not the paintings at the ceiling let him stand astonished, and neither the artful ornaments, the globes, and other artifacts.
The books took his breath away. Never before, he had seen so many books in one place, side by side, waiting to be read. Only hesitating, he stepped closer, let his fingers wander over colorful bookcovers. So many words, hidden behind them. He wondered if one man would be able to take in all of them.
Only years later, he realized that this had been the changing point in his life. He studied philology, worked as a professor at the university for a while until he got a chance he had never dared to dream about.
The chance to create something unique, something no one had ever dared to create before: a dictionary, containing every single word that had ever existed in the English language, with example sentences and the etymological derivation.
He had hoped to finish it within years, but it lasted a lifetime, and he never reached the word Zyzzyva, a genus of South African weevils found on or near palm trees.
