Erin eyed the little guy, full of worry, while he grabbed the old backpack from the floor. „I wish you would stay here for some time,“ she said. „You haven't even fully recovered yet.“

„But I can't. I had already stayed for much too long. Kurdy is safe; my job is done. Now, something new is waiting for me out there, even if I don't know what it will be.“ Smith shrugged. „I guess God will tell me when I need to know.“

She didn't laugh like most others would do. „I can't believe he wants you to be on the road during one of the coldest winters I can remember. You will freeze to death.“

„No need to worry. I am his messenger; as long as he needs me, he will have an eye on me.“

„This doesn't sound very reassuring.“ Erin sighed. „If I can't convince you to stay here until the worst is over, take this, at least.“ She pulled out a rolled-up blanket, grey and light green. „It's a bit silly looking, with hood and footpocket, but it will hopefully keep you warm on cold nights.“

Smith hesitated. „Does Lee know about it? I am sure this waste of valuable resources won't amuse him.“

„Lee is not a bad guy; he only does what he thinks is best for the Mountain and its people. But even he knows what you have done for Kurdy. A blanket for a life, that's not much, don't you think so?“

Slowly, Smith nodded. „Okay.“ He grabbed the blanket and tied it up to his backpack. It felt thick and warm, promising at least some comfort during the upcoming winter nights. A treasure, like the old camera he kept hidden in the depths of his backpack and the watch that didn't work anymore. „Thank you, Erin. For just everything.“ He shouldered the bag, turning to the big gate of the Mountain.

Looking sad, Erin waved him goodbye. „Take good care of you, Smith.“

He stopped and smiled. „He says one day we will meet again.“
