Title: Riddle Games
Characters: Bilbo, mention of Gollum
Prompt: riddle in the dark
Words: 258
:::
Sometimes, when Bilbo couldn't sleep, he tried to remember some good old riddles. How much fun it had been, sitting around a campfire with a group of hobbit children. „You always know the best riddles, uncle Bilbo,“ his nephew Frodo had told him with mischievous sparkling eyes. It had been long after his bedtime, but Bilbo hadn't minded. He had laughed before he came up with a new riddle. „The last one for tonight,“ he had said. However, everyone had known that it would go like this for hours.
Bilbo smiled, his heart full of melancholy. It seemed as if this had been another life. And maybe it was; so many years had passed, so many horrible things had happened. Some good things, too. Now, he had almost reached the end of his life and had made peace with most of it.
Just one memory could still give him nightmares. Riddles in the dark. He had been so young back then, and thoughtless, and reckless. Gollum's threat still drowned in his ears. „The riddles. If you don't find the answer, I will eat you for breakfast.“ He could still feel a shudder running down his spine, but he had almost enjoyed it back then. It was a game he loved to play.
A game for his life, and he almost lost it. Only with a dirty trick (he had never before used one to win) did he finally defeat Gollum. And escaped through the darkness, with the ring in his pocket.
He never played a riddle game again.
