Looking tired, Casey dropped down on the old couch in Zeke's garage. „You won't believe what is happened.“
Zeke could see the tension in his body. „Guess you can't wait to tell me?“
„My grandpa.“ Casey paused, kneading his shaking hands. „Last week, we got a letter from his notary.“
„Okay,“ Zeke murmured, knowing he had to be careful. Casey had loved his grandpa, maybe the only one in the family who had always backed him up. To lose him because of a sudden heart attack without any warning was hard to endure for him.
„He... he made me his heir. There is some money for my dad and my uncle, but the old house goes to me.“ Casey sighed, covering his face in his hands. „My dad says that we will have to sell it. He is already looking for an estate agent.“
When tears started to flow, Zeke squeezed his shoulder reassuringly. „But this is not what you want.“
„I don't know; I am so confused. So many memories, so many good times I've spent there. And I don't want to imagine anyone else living there. But...“
„Well, you have the last say, no matter your dad's wishes. He can't force you to sell it.“
Casey looked up. „Let's stay realistic, Zeke. I am 18 years old, still going to school. My dad is right; I can't afford the costs of the old house. And for sure, he won't spring in.“
„Hm. After all you told me about your grandpa, I think he had a good reason for giving the house to you.“
„Yes,“ Casey whispered. „He knew how much I love it. But no one could presage that he... that he would go so early. I mean, in ten years or so, I would have finished college and a job... Then I wouldn't think about selling the house. Of course not.“
„Then you shouldn't think about it now, either. I am sure the last your grandpa wanted was breaking your heart.“
A weak smile sneaked on Casey's face. „All he wanted was to help me to live my dreams. He was the only one who always did believe in my talent as a photographer. When my dad said that he would never pay for photo school, my grandpa was the one who told me that it is still too early to give up.“ The smile vanished. „Without him, all seems to be so senseless.“
„No, it's not,“ Zeke protested. „Your grandpa was a smart guy; it is much too early to bust your head in the sand and to give up. You have problems, look for solutions.
Find a decent renter if you don't want to sell the house. The rent will hopefully cover the running costs. You want to go to photo school after graduation? Ask your art teacher and the leader of your photo course for recommendation letters; try to get at least a part-time scholarship. You can't get into the photo school of your dreams? Start smaller, and you can work your way up later.“
Satisfied, he noticed the surprise in Casey's eyes, so he had finally managed it to tear him out of his paralyzing mourning. „But whatever you decide to do, stay up against your dad and find your own way. And your grandpa, no matter where he is now, will be proud of you.“
