„A telephone,“ Michelle explained. „To stay in contact with friends and family. Like a walkie-talkie, but for longer distances. You could even talk with people in Africa.“
Green-brown eyes widened, surprised. „Does it still work?“
„No. You know, since the virus, most of the old technique doesn't work anymore.“
„Too sad. Sister Hannah told us about Africa. It would be fun to talk with the children living there.“
Michelle smiled. „Maybe one day, Rose, you will be able to get in contact with the whole world again.“

Michelle turned around; looking curious, the little girl pointed at one of the shelves in the large storage room. „It's a telephone," she explained. "People used it to stay in contact with friends and family.“
„Sometimes I talk with my dad via a walkie-talkie.“
Michelle smiled. „It's not quite the same. A telephone was for a much longer distance. You could talk with people all over the world.“
Green-brown eyes widened, surprised. „With Africa?“
„Yes, also with Africa.“
„Sister Hannah did work in Africa once. She told us, the children living there all have dark skin, like Kurdy. But this was before the virus. Sister Hannah is very old.“ She kept quiet for a moment, biting her lower lip. „Do you think the children in Africa are still alive?“
Michelle hesitated, then decided that the little girl was much too smart for lies. „I don't know,“ she admitted. „We haven't had contact with people living on other continents for fifteen years. But I hope so. We have found a way to survive, so I guess other people did, too.“
Thoughtfully Rose looked back at the old telephone. „It would be great, wouldn't it, if it would still work. We could try to find it out.“
„That would be great,“ Michelle agreed, squeezing her shoulder. „But don't give up hope. One day, Rose, the whole world might be open for you again. Until then, all you can do is learn as much as possible about the old times.“
