„Oh shit,“ Zeke cursed when he noticed Casey Connor cowering on the bench near the little lake of the park; soaking wet and shaking all over but only interested in checking out his beloved camera. He hesitated; no, this was not his business; it was about time that this little geeked learned to stand up for himself. Otherwise the bullying would never stop.
Suddenly Casey looked up, their eyes crossed. „What? Don't you have anything better to do?“
Inwardly Zeke chuckled; okay, it didn't seem to be too bad, still the same quick tongue which brought him into trouble all too often. „Need some help,“ he still asked.
„Does it look like that?“ Casey clutched his camera with both hands. „No, of course not, bathing fully dressed in a muddy lake is the biggest fun of my life.“
Now Zeke grinned openly. „But it's pretty cold today; maybe you should better warm up. C'mon, I think there is an old blanket in the GTO.“
The skeptical way Casey stared at him told volumes. And Zeke had to admit that he couldn't blame him. All too often, he had seen the jocks bullying him, but though it would have been easy for him to step in, he had preferred to turn his eyes away. So, what was different today? He couldn't even say.
„Don't be silly, you know, I'm none of them. And you need to get rid of these wet clothes, or you'll end in the Herrington Mercy with pneumonia. Do you really want this?“
To his surprise Casey blushed deeply, and he realized what he had said. „The blanket will have to be enough for the moment. I'm gonna give you a ride home; guess, your mom will take care of you with lemon tea and a hot-water bottle.“
