Casey tossed and turned around in his bed, unable to find some sleep. All this couldn't be true. Finally his life had been okay, almost perfect. He was happy. Or, at least he had thought to be happy. Until tonight; until Zeke had turned his life around again. Suddenly he put everything in question what had looked like a perfect life.
He had a girlfriend, Delilah Profitt, the cheerleader queen of Herrington High, and he knew a lot of guys envied him for that. They had already made future plans, wanted to move to Chicago after graduation because Del had gotten a journalistic scholarship for the Northwestern University. His parents were proud of him, finally.
He had always known that they were a bit ashamed of him because he was not the son they had hoped for; he was a nerd, a loner; he loved photography and used to hang in around in the library instead of playing Football or Baseball. No one had ever cared much about him.
Until this one day, last autumn, had changed everything. Aliens had tried to take over the Herrington High, and he had stopped them. He still couldn't remember what exactly had happened, but at the end of the night, the alien queen was dead, but most people in Herrington still alive and unharmed. And everyone called him a hero, well, almost everyone.
Yes, for a while he had enjoyed the attention he got, the media interest, the parties. Suddenly he was the most interesting guy at school; even the jocks showed him respect, and the girls were around him as the bees around the flowers. The whole world seemed to be open to him.
Until this incident in the morning, in the boy's washroom, had turned his world around once again.
„Casey, I am starting to worry about you.“
Slightly confused, he turned to Zeke. „What are you talking about?“
„I've heard you will go to Chicago with Delilah soon. What's with your fabulous plans? The trip around the world before college? By train or by bus, to learn more about the countries and the people living there. Later New York Academy of Art; learning from the world's greatest artists.“
„Del has gotten this scholarship for the Northwestern; she can't reject that. I can go to art school in Chicago, too. And for next summer, we plan to make a longer cruise.“
Zeke smirked. „A cruise? Oh, c'mon, Casey, that's not you. Where is the boy with the geekiest ideas?“
„Zeke, I won't discuss this with you!“ Slowly Casey got angry. „You were never interested in other people's lives before, so why don't you better mind your own business?“
„You only see what I want others to see, a good show.“ Zeke sighed slightly. „But believe me, I do care about you, I always did.“
For a moment Casey kept quiet, not sure what to think about this news. „Well, then you have a strange way to show this. It would have been easy for you to step in when Gabe and the others bullied me over and over again. But you preferred to close your eyes, as always.“
„Why should I? I'm not a knight in shining armor, and you never were a damsel in distress. Even if it doesn't look like it, you are much stronger than you think. You always did go your way, not caring about others.“ Zeke paused, pulling the face. „It's a shame that a stupid alien queen could change you that much.“
Casey pressed his lips together. „I guess Marybeth has changed all of us. Even you.“
„It was not this bitch who turned my life around. Something else happened that night.“ Zeke hesitated shortly, but then he continued. „You and me, under the bus. Everything seemed to be lost. I started to think about if it would be better to kill me... to kill both of us.“
„God, Zeke!“ Casey paled visibly. „How could you even think of doing that?“
„No need to worry; obviously I didn't, right.“ Zeke smirked. „Because of what you did.“
„I only did what needed to be done. After you got knocked out, no one else was around to do it.“
„Yeah, I know. But I am not talking about you, standing up against an alien queen all alone. While we still were discussing what to do next, you suddenly bent forward and kissed me... like no one else has ever kissed me before.“
„What?“ Casey's eyes flared wide open in panic. No, no, no! This was impossible; he had always been smart enough to hide his true feelings; had always known that he would be dead fucking meat if someone would ever find out. He would never be that bold...
„Hey, no need to freak out.“ Zeke's voice was surprisingly calm. „ It's okay. Nothing wrong with it to feel like that. I knew it at this moment that this was what I wanted to do for such a long time already. But I was a coward, not ready to admit it.“
Casey huffed. „This is ridiculous. You were in a panic like I was. Everything was out of control; we both couldn't think clearly anymore. This...“ His voice was shaking now. „This kiss meant nothing at all.“
„Maybe.“ Zeke nodded slowly. „Yeah, maybe you are right, and I am not the one who can make you happy. But Delilah can neither.
I guess she never was interested in you, but in the fame you've gotten lately. Otherwise, she would care for your wishes and dreams and not only think about herself. That's not love, Casey, and I am afraid, one day you will wake up and realize that all your dreams are gone and you are caught in a desolate life.
This is a thought I hate because you are someone extraordinary, and you deserve better.“
:::
Casey sighed and switched on his bedside lamp. Tonight he wouldn't find any sleep; too much he had to think about.
