Casey secretly watched the young guy who was casually leaning against the wall of the elevator, flicking through a car magazine. Slender, tall, good looking. He would have loved to have a look at his eyes. The eyes are the window to the soul, his grandma had always told him, and maybe he should have better listened to her advice. Then he would have noticed it in time that this shithead Dennis never had been interested in him but only in mindless sex. It had hurt, a lot, but it was over now, and about time to get him out of his mind and to move on.
All of a sudden, the elevator stopped with a granting sound, the light flickered for some seconds. Slightly panicked Casey looked around. „What's going on?“
„Out of order. This shit happens at least once a week. Better make yourself comfortable; it can take some time.“
Casey swallowed, memories rushing through his mind. He had been four when his cousin had looked him up in the pantry one day, and it had taken almost two hours until someone freed him. „Great.“
The guy chuckled. „Hey, no need to worry.“
„I don't.“ But the trembling of his voice told volumes.
„Okay. Need a cigarette? Helps to calm down.“
„What?“ Casey stared at the guy who was now pulling a box Marlboro out of his jacket. „You want to smoke in an elevator which got stuck? Are you fucking mad?“
„Get it. You are a good boy who always follows the rules.“
And Casey knew he was blushing. „Nothing wrong with that,“ he huffed.
„But life is so much more enjoyable when you are a rebel at least now and then.“ Hazelnut brown eyes sparkled slightly amused, but Casey could say that it was only friendly teasing. Suddenly his heartbeat quickened even more, and this time it was not because of panic. More the opposite, he wished that they would get stuck here for much longer. Oh, he didn't fool himself, a good looking guy like this would never pay any attention to him under normal circumstances, but...
A light buzzing of a motor tore him out of his thoughts, and the elevator started to move downwards again.
„Woah, they were quick today.“
„That's good.“ Casey turned his eyes away, not sure if he would be able to hide the stupid disappointment which was rushing through his body.
Only a moment later the doors opened, and dimmish sunlight fell into the passenger area. But before Casey could grab his backpack and step out, the guy said: “There is a Starbucks only a few steps away. Seems as if you can need a coffee. My treat.“
„Why should you? You don't even know me,“ Casey blurted out, and a split of a second later he cringed inwardly. As a goodbye Dennis had told him that he was sick of it to deal with such an awkward geek like he was. And obviously he had been right; he had just proved it again.
But the guy laughed. „I guess we can change this. Name is Zeke. Yours?“
