„You want...what?“ Casey stared at Zeke, his lab partner in chemistry for about two years already. „You want to quit school two months before graduation? But why?“
„Because I can.“ Zeke smirked. „And because it will drive my so-called dad crazy. This will be a hell of a lot of fun.“
„That's so stupid.“ Annoyed Casey shook his head. „You did so well lately, and Mr. Furlong even offered to help you with college. This decision will ruin your future. I just can't get it.“
„Well, you don't have to.“ Zeke shrugged. „It's none of your business, so get over it.“
Suddenly Casey felt tears burning in his eyes. It was pathetic, he knew it, and probably Zeke would laugh about him and call him a wimp, but he couldn't help it.
„Maybe not,“ he whispered. „But we spent so much time together during the last years, working for school projects or at lunchbreak on the bleachers. I've got to know you better; you are not half as shallow as you pretend to be. Quitting school might sound cool, but it won't make you happy.“
Zeke narrowed his eyes, keeping quiet for a long while. „You really care for me,“ he finally murmured, his voice sounding surprised.
„Of course I do. That's what friends do.“
„We are friends?“
„Feels like it.“ Casey shrugged, slightly embarrassed. „Besides my family, there are not many people I am close with.“
„Yeah, I've noticed that.“ Suddenly Zeke smiled. „Hey, any plans for this afternoon. We could meet in my garage, trying to replicate this experiment, which failed at school this morning. Mr. Furlong will be impressed by your brilliant mind if we can find out what went wrong.“
Casey stayed suspicious. „Does this mean that you don't plan to quit school any longer?“
„It means that I won't leave my partner of crime alone,“ Zeke answered and winked at Casey, “as long as he needs me.“
