„Smith, what's wrong?“ Slightly worried, Kurdy eyed his partner and friend. The little guy acted a bit strange often, but to see him in this desolate state was unusual.

„My backpack. Gone.“

„Huh?“

„Stolen. Last night.“ Smith breathed in shakingly. „My fault, I guess, I should have been more careful.“

Shit. Kurdy cursed inwardly, well knowing how much the worn-out backpack had meant for Smith. All the treasures he owned were hidden in there; two blankets, some clothes, his camera, and family pictures. Not his own family; Smith had told Kurdy one night that he had found them long ago in an abandoned house. When Kurdy had looked slightly confused, the little guy had answered: “I can't remember my family, I can't even remember anything of my past, but when I look at these photos I don't feel alone any longer. These people give me the courage to move on.“

Yes, it sounded strange, but Kurdy had long stopped to put any of Smith's words into question. And he could imagine how the little guy was feeling right now; as if he had lost everything of importance in his life for a second time. He stepped forward to put his hand onto Smith's shoulder. „You should go, talk with Erin. The Mountain has big storerooms; I'm sure she will be able to replace your backpack and most of your stuff. It's not the same, I know, but...“

He paused, feeling helpless, when Smith looked up, smiling sadly. „Thank you, Kurdy. I know you only try to help. But I'm afraid I'm not ready for it yet. Not sure if I will ever be.“ He fell back onto the small bed, closing his eyes. „Please, leave me alone, will you?“

Silently Kurdy watched him, not sure what to do. It was understandable that Smith wanted to be left alone, but nevertheless it felt wrong. Suddenly an idea crossed his mind. „Okay, take some rest,“ he agreed. „But what do you think about a trip to the school this afternoon? It's ages ago that we did look after Sister Hannah and the children.“

It seemed to take a while until the words reached Smith, but finally he opened his eyes again. „Rose,“ he whispered.

„Yeah, Rose will be there, too,“ Kurdy answered, feeling relieved. He could see a spark of hope in Smith's eyes. If someone was able to give him the comfort he needed now, it was this little girl with long blonde hair and green-brown eyes, who never talked much, never played with the other children. But there was a special bond between her and Smith; Kurdy had noticed this the first moment they met.
