Title: The Parting of the Way
Characters: Nick Burghardt, Eddie Monroe
Prompt: There are times when one path becomes two and you must choose.
Words: 391
:::
Nick leaned back on the old chair, a glass of whiskey in his hands. It had been one of those days; he had to make some hard decisions, and he had known, whatever he did, in the end, it would feel wrong. „Sometimes I wish to turn back time,“ he said, “and I would still do my job as a cop, unaware of the knowledge about all the hidden evil in the world. Since I know the truth about my destiny, everything is so complicated.“
Monroe eyed him thoughtfully. „No one says it's easy. But you should better learn quickly how to deal with it. Otherwise, one day, it will tear you apart.“
„How did you learn to accept your fate?“
„I don't accept it, not anymore.“ Monroe paused shortly before continuing. „I ignored the consequences of being a Blutbad far too long; I lived in solitary and did what I thought was my nature. “ He pulled his face. „Don't ask; you don't want to know. But if we had met some years ago, you would have called me a monster instead a friend.“
Nick kept quiet, refusing to think too much about these words. It was easier to see him as the geeky clockmaker than the wolf-like creature who sometimes tried to gain the upper hand. As if he could read his mind, Monroe smirked. „Don't worry, I wouldn't blame you. Sometimes, I hated myself for being like this. Until one day, the truth hit me with full force.
You can move on like you always did, ignoring everything around you, until there is no way back anymore. The darkness around you will get deeper and deeper until you are so tired that you will only be waiting for the end.
Or you choose to take a different path, even if you don't know yet where it will lead. You will have to fight daily against your instincts, and you can never be sure you will win the next fight. Every day is a struggle to see the light. It's not always fun.“
„Do you regret it sometimes,“ Nick asked,“ that you have chosen the second way?“
Without hesitation, Monroe shook his head. „No! Because it's the only way to have some kind of a life.“ Suddenly, he grinned. "And I have learned to love pilates."
