„Hey!“ With a wide grin, Casey stepped closer to the baby carriage. „Oh, it looks as if she has grown up even more since last week.“

„That's not a surprise; she's a little glutton, wakes me up every night three times.“

Casey turned to Delilah, frowning slightly. „I can see that, you are looking tired.“

„It's not always sunshine to be a single mom,“ she admitted. „24/7 job. And sometimes, when I think about the future, it almost scares me.“

„Understand. It is not what you have always dreamed about. Journalistic college, writing for famous magazines, jetting around the world. You always have had big ambitions, and with a baby, all this suddenly seems out of reach.“ Casey smiled. „But maybe I have an idea to cheer you up a bit. I am sure Zeke wouldn't mind babysitting now and then so that you can have some free time for yourself. Meet some of your friends again, go to a movie. Maybe you could even sign up for some evening courses at City College. Having a baby is not the end of your own life.“

Thoughtfully, Delilah kept quiet for a while. „Thanks, Casey. Maybe I will come back to your offer one day.“ The baby girl smacked her lips while she was asleep, and she gently touched the tiny cheek with her finger. „But honestly, my so-called friends seem not interested in hanging around with me any longer. And it was surprisingly easy to give up my wild dreams of a career as a famous journalist. Looks as if my priorities are different now.“

„Okay. And what's the problem then? You don't look like a happy mom.“

„Don't you get it, Casey?“ Deliah threw her hair back, and her eyes sparkled slightly annoyed. „It's not about me any longer. Marie deserves a good mom, and I am not sure if I will ever be enough for her.

Before I held her in my arms for the first time, I had never thought about being her mom. I wasn't prepared to bring her home and take care of her. I already was in contact with an adoption agency.“

„Oh!“ Casey swallowed hard.

Delilah huffed sadly. „Yes, I am that kind of a mom. Seems to be in the genes. Do you know that I am adopted, too? Don't even know the name of my actual parents. And my adoptive parents.“ She paused, shrugging. „As long as I was the visionary and successful girl, everything was fine. The moment I needed them most, they left me alone. Since I decided against adoption, we have barely talked.“

Casey noticed tears sparkling in her eyes; it was strange to see her in that vulnerable state. Delilah had always been the queen at school who knew how to control everything. For a while, she had also controlled him; before Zeke stepped into his life. They were still friends, though, and it was great to see how much Delilah had changed since Marie had stepped into her life. „But you don't regret it, do you,“ he asked, almost a bit afraid of the answer.

To his relief, she shook her head without hesitation. „No! She is the best that ever happened to me. I am just so afraid. All I want is a happy life for her; she shouldn't grow up without the feeling of being loved. But what if I fail as her mother? I don't know what a good mom is supposed to do.“

Casey stepped closer, putting an arm around her shoulder. „No need to worry, Del, no one is perfect. Not even a mom. You will probably make mistakes like everyone. Like my mom did and still does. I am almost twenty years old, I have a boyfriend, I go to college... and she still acts like a mother-hen every time I come home. Does this drive me crazy sometimes? Yes! Will I stop loving her because of that? For sure not! Because I know why she is acting like this.“

Casey chuckled. „She loves me, Del; she has loved me from the very first moment; I was her baby, and I guess I will always be. Because she will always be my mom.“

Delilah smiled weakly. „She is a good mom,“ she agreed.

„You are doing a great job, too, Delilah; just don't be so hard on yourself. And I am sure Marie will be fine. Because you are strong, you are smart... and you love her!“

„Bah brrr!“

Both of them turned the baby carrier; two brown eyes were eying them curiously, and a beaming smile turned on Delilah's face. „Oh, look who is awake!“
