Rosie opened the door to Bag End and smiled while replacing the withered wildflowers with new ones. Sam loved flowers; this was the first thing his eyes would see when he opened the door to his new house. And he would come home; maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, but he would come home to the Shire. Where Bag End was waiting for him.
„Have an eye on it, Rosie,“ Frodo had begged her the day he left the Shire with Gandalf and Sam. „For Sam. I don't know when he will be ready to come back, but I hope, one day, he will, and I want him to find Bag End as the comfortable home I have left it.“
For weeks now, she was coming here every morning. She dusted the shelves, polished the table in the dining room and Bilbo's old desk; she mopped the floor and cleaned the windows. She washed the dishes once a week and changed the bed sheets.
The pantry was well-stocked with preserved fruits and vegetables, cheese and salted meat, beer and wine, and a keg of Old Toby.
Rosie closed the door behind her, for today her work was done, when she noticed a little figure coming down the small path. She squeezed her eyes shut against the glaring sunlight. Her heart beat quicker. Maybe it was him?
