Finally, the ship vanished into the clouds, leaving behind the endless blue sea and an emptiness in Sam's heart, which he had never felt before. Frodo was gone. Bilbo and Gandalf were gone. He would never see them again. Tears were running over his face, and he wasn't able to stop them.
On his way back home, together with Merry and Pippin, he could barely endure it. How could they laugh and joke when they had just bid his best friend goodbye? Sam felt anger rising up, wanted to yell at them to stop that. But then, he felt much too tired for a fight; he curled up in his blanket, pretending to sleep.
The way home was a long one. Mountains, and lakes, and woods - so many fabulous places. Back then, ages ago, when life was still intact, when no one in the Shire knew about the dark times coming, he had dreamed about places like this so often. And Frodo had teased him and called him Sam, the Adventurer. The thought of this made him smile.
After about four day, they reached the border of the Shire. Merry and Pippin bid him goodbye; their way was different now. „But we will come, visit you soon,“ Pippin promised, and Merry winked, handing over a sachet of Old Tobi and a pitcher of red wine. One last huge, and they were gone. Sam let his eyes wander over green meadows and trees full of fruits. Not the same anymore, never more, but home.
Only some steps to go, and he would be there. Bag End. Bilbo's house. Frodo's house. His house now. At the Grey Havens, Frodo gave it to him, together with the Red Book. Sam had been sure that he wouldn't be able to endure the sight of this place; it would be empty and silent and cold without the people he loved so much. His heart was beating wildly when he turned around the last corner. And there she was.
Rosie — Rosie Cotton — with flowers in her hair, and she smiled while greeting him. „You are back, Samwise Gamgee, you are back!“ And when she kissed him on his cheek, he knew that even if Frodo would always be in his heart, he still had a future.
