Sam looked at the old wizard, who was sitting on the bench beside him. „I am worried about Master Frodo,“ he murmured, almost inaudibly, as if he was afraid of his own words. „It seems as if he withdraws even more with every day.“
Gandalf nodded, making some more smoke rings. „I am not surprised,“ he finally answered.
„But what can I do to help him? Gandalf? Please, tell me...“
The desperation in Sam's voice almost broke Gandalf's heart. His eyes wandered over the flowers, the fruit trees, and the fields – yes, the dark times were over, nature started to bloom again, and people started to hope again.
The burden, though, Frodo had carried for so long might have been too much. He was overwhelmed by hiraeth, filled with grief and despair so deep that even Gandalf wasn't able to reach him anymore.
There was only one place where maybe – maybe – he could find some rest and peace again. Elrond had already suggested that Frodo, the ringbearer, should go into the West together with the elves, who would leave Middle-earth soon enough.
Gandalf sighed, squeezing Sam's shoulder gently. Tears welled up in the little hobbit's eyes.
