Friday morning. Same shit as ever. Zeke watched Casey hurrying to the darkroom, the star player of the Hornets only some steps behind him. „Oh, c'mon,“ Gabe snarled when the door fell shut behind Casey,“ you know, you can't escape your fate. Once a geek, always a geek.“

Zeke pulled his face. No, he was not interested in an encounter with the football god from Herrington High; he was one of his best customers, and at the moment, he needed the money more than ever before. But he felt guilty in some way; Casey might be different than the others, but he did nothing to deserve all the teasing and bullying. Actually, he was quite okay.

Zeke remembered last weekend, when he had met him at the mall in Grandville. It had been like a shock; he had never thought he would run into someone from Herrington there. Discovering his secret; no, he was not the cool boy with wealthy parents who could get all he wanted with only a snap of his fingers. He had to work for daily life, for the upkeep of the house he had inherited from his grandmother, and for the GTO, which meant all to him.

But this was his business alone; no one in Herrington knew about it. Besides, maybe Casey. The boy had seen him jobbing in the shabby bookstore, and Zeke was aware of the half-curious, half-thoughtful looks he had thrown at him now and then during the last week. But he had never tried to take adventage out of his knowledge, Casey was not like that.

Gabe was rattling at the door. „You can't hide in there forever, you douchebag.“

„Hey, what's going on here?“

Gabe jerked around but calmed down again when recognizing Zeke. „The Connor geek again; he's so pathetic. I'm wondering how long it will still take until he gives up and quits school. It's about time.“

Zeke smirked. „Why should he?“

„Because he is a shame for every school. He shouldn't go to Herrington High.“

„He got an A+ in last week's chemistry test, and I can tell you, it was a tricky one. What was your grade?“

Gabe blinked, annoyed; finally, he shrugged. „I am the star of the Hornets; we are preparing for the most important game of the season. The coach would kick my ass for bothering with chemistry or other stuff at the moment.“

„Oh, sorry, I forgot.“

„What the hell is wrong with you today, Tyler? Since when you are big friends with this stupid geek? Better be careful, or one day, this will bring you into trouble.“

With narrowed eyes, Zeke stepped closer. „Now, is that a threat?“

Gabe tried to move back, but the wall stopped him. „No! No, of course not.“ His voice a bit too rushed; Zeke smirked inwardly; what a pathetic coward he was when he felt cornered. „We are fine, Zeke.“

„I thought so. Just another good piece of advice. Stop messing around with Casey. I will have an eye on this from now on.“

At first, it looked as if he wanted to protest, but finally, Gabe licked his lips and nodded. „Okay. Fine by me; he's not worth all the trouble anyway.“

Zeke watched him rushing down the hall and huffed slightly; then he turned to the darkroom's door. „You can come out there now, he's gone.“

Slowly the door opened, Casey looking around still full of distrust. „What's happened?“

„I made him an offer he couldn't refuse.“

„The Godfather!"

„Good movie!“

Casey smiled slightly and shouldered his backpack. „I don't know why you did this, but thank you,“ he murmured.

„Nothing big,“ Zeke said, then he followed Gabe down the hall, whistling to himself. For whatever reason, he felt better than he had in a long time.
