Feeling free and happy, Casey strolled through the Grandville Mall. Yes, the mall was only small, but he had gotten some extra pocket money from his grandma this morning, and, unlike the mall of Herrington, he wasn't in danger of tripping over one of the jocks from school any moment. The only question bothering him was whether he should visit the comic shop first or the photo studio, which had opened only some weeks ago. Latter probably was much too expensive for him, but he was curious.
Suddenly, his eyes fall on the slender figure decorating the window of the secondhand bookstore. He frowned. This was funny; the boy looked so familiar. Tight denim, long-sleeved shirt, the brown hair a bit messy; like Zeke Tyler, well known as the rebel of Herrington High. The dealer for every kind of stuff, the heartbreaker who flirted with every girl but never dated one of them. But everyone respected him; even most teachers seemed willing to overlook his escapades. He was the king at school, while Casey was only the geek, teased and bullied.
As if he could feel Casey's look, the boy suddenly turned around, and Casey's heart stopped beating for a split of a second. This was... woah. What the hell was Zeke Tyler doing here, in Grandville, in the window of a shabby bookstore?
:::
Some days later, at Herrington High. Casey had just parked his bike and grabbed his backpack when he felt a hand on his shoulder. „Just a word!“
Frowning, he turned around, eying the older boy with a mixture of curiosity and nervousness. Zeke was none of the bullies, but he had never paid any attention to him; not a big surprise, they had nothing in common. Hazelnut brown, piercing eyes rested on him.
„Just good advice; better care about your own business.“
Casey blinked. „What are you talking about?“
„Don't play dumb! Last weekend, Grandville. The bookstore. I know, you've noticed me!“
„Well, yes, I did.“ Casey shrugged. „And I admit, I was surprised to see you there.“
„Like I said, none of your business. You don't talk about it, and we are fine.“
For a split of a moment, Casey felt anger rising. „And what will happen if I don't play along?“ To his surprise, he noticed some uneasiness flickering over Zeke's face and smiled. „Don't worry, I am not interested in whatever shit you were doing there.“
At first, it looked as if Zeke wanted to answer, but then he shrugged. „Good for you,“ he said and turned around to wander to the bleachers, where his first customers of the day would already wait for him.
