„No!“ Shocked, Casey shook his head. „You can't be serious!“
„Why not? I am sick of it to pretend that I am the heartbreaker who is not interested in a serious relationship. Who only thinks about wild parties and shit, and who cares about no one.“
„I get that.“ Casey licked his dry lips, his heart beating wildly. Since he was together with Zeke, he had secretly wished they wouldn't need to hide their feelings; only some stolen hours in Zeke's garage, he hadn't even dared to share some fleeting words with him at school. But to make it official that they were a couple... this would turn both their worlds around.
„I hoped that you would be more enthusiastic.“ Zeke smirked. „But maybe I was wrong, and all this is not as serious for you as for me.“
„How can you think this?“ Casey's blue eyes sparkled. „But you don't know how it is to be the freak everyone uses as a punching ball. I do! I will deal with it, whatever will happen. But you? You have done all to earn your rep at school; everyone respects you.“ He paused shortly. „I couldn't endure it when you finally will start hating me because you have lost all when means so much to you.“
Zeke breathed in deeply. „I could never hate you,“ he whispered. „I love you!“
Casey paled. „Shit!“
„That bad?“
„Yes... ähm... NO!“ Casey shook his head wildly. „It's just... We never talked about love before.“
„Because I wasn't sure about it. But what I feel for you, I've never felt before. Yes, it was kind of scary at first, but I know now that I am ready for it. I don't want to hide it any longer; I want to take your side openly and take care of you. I can't take my eyes from it any longer when others bully you.“
„Zeke!“ Suddenly tears were sparkling in Casey's eyes. „I love you, too. And all I want is to let the world know about it. But this is not a good timing; Herrington is not the right place for a coming out. It would be hell for both of us.
I don't care to meet you only in secret as long as I know that you love me.“ He stepped closer, putting his arms around Zeke's neck, and rested his temple on Zeke's. „And maybe, one day, when we have left the closemindedness of Ohio behind, we can make it official, and people hopefully won't hate us for what we are.“
