Casey entered Zeke's garage, deciding to ignore full ashtrays, empty pizza boxes, and cans of Heineken.

„Hey, how are you doing today?“ He must almost cry because the TV was turned on much too loud.

Zeke didn't even turn away from the TV. „What does it look like,“ he snarled.

Okay, the mood had even downgraded, which he hadn't considered possible yesterday. „My mom has made her famous green bean casserole for you,“ Casey said. „She thinks it can cure everything.“

„Good God, Casey!“ Zeke jerked around and winced when the pain was rushing through his leg. Groaning, he sank back into the cushions. „Why can't you just leave me alone? I've told you, I don't need a nurse.“

„Why are you acting like an ass?“ Slowly anger grew up in Casey. „A twice-broken leg is not fun, I get that, but it's not a reason to push everyone away who only tries to help you.“

„I don't want any help!“

„Hm. But maybe this time it's not about what you want but what you need. What's your plan? You want to stay in your garage for the following weeks until you can start with rehab, with pizza and watching mindless TV shows?“

„I don't have much of a choice, right?“

„You can be such a stubborn shit!“ Casey rolled his eyes. „How does this sound? You will vanish in the bathroom for a moment, and I can heat the casserole. It's good, would be a shame to waste it. Maybe we could eat on the porch; it's such a lovely, warm spring evening.“

Zeke stared at him with piercing eyes, and Casey was sure all his try to break the tension would be in vain. But suddenly, a barely visible smile turned up on Zeke's face. „Will you leave me alone when I say no?“

„No!“ Casey giggled. „Maybe I could even call at home, ask to stay a bit longer today. We could play Magic later. Or whatever you would like to do.“

„What's with curfew?“

„Oh, my mom loves you; it won't be difficult to convince her that you can need some extra company at the moment.“

„The chemistry between you two is just too interesting,“ Stokely said.

„What are you talking about?“

„You and Zeke, of course.“

Stiffening in every movement, Casey blushed involuntarily. „There is no chemistry between us. We are lab partners, that's all.“

Stokely shrugged. „I know. And you hang around at the bleachers every lunch break lately. You can barely take your eyes off him. And the way Zeke glares at the jocks when they get closer to you speaks volumes. Usually, he doesn't care about anyone but himself.“

Casey licked his dry lips. „That's all only in your imagination.“

„I don't think it's anything wrong with it,“ Stokely said. „Rather the direct opposite. You two could be good for each other. Zeke could have an eye on you, and you could keep him grounded.“

„Zeke will die laughing when he hears about your wild theory. But maybe he will kill you first.“

Stokely grinned. "We will see," she said.
