„Why do you hang around with this freak,“ Jeremiah wanted to know when his partner Kurdy finally stepped closer, dropping on the chair opposite him. „He's just too strange.“
Kurdy sipped his coffee before answering. „A lot about him is a mystery, but actually, he seems okay. I'm sure he would never hurt someone deliberately.“
„I wouldn't be that sure about it. This morning...“
„I know, I've heard about it. But I can't believe that he was brewing mischief.“
„Why do you have such a great fancy for him? He's only a stranger passing through. Why do you care?“
Kurdy hesitated shortly. „I met him first some weeks ago. And he saved my life,“ he finally said. „Remember that night I went on patrol alone because you had a high fever? A group of skinheads surrounded me, and it didn't look good. But suddenly he was there, stepped right out of a fireball, and although he wasn't even armed, the skinheads suddenly were in a hurry to get into their jeeps.
Not caring about me any longer, they left me behind, tied up at a tree, hurt, almost unconscious, but still alive. He cut the ropes, offered me some water, and stayed with me until it was sure I would make the way back home alone. Then he grabbed his backpack and vanished into the night again.“
Kurdy shrugged. „I wasn't even sure if he wasn't only a product of my fantasy, until he turned up at the Mountain two weeks ago.“
Jeremiah had listened in silence; now, he pulled his face. „As I said, he's just too strange. You will be well advised to stay out of his way before he causes even more trouble.“
