She knew that even most of the elves didn't believe that Sauron would come back one day. After the final battle, the earth had turned into a peaceful place for eons. But she could feel it; the darkness was still there, only waiting for the right moment. Sneaking out of its hidden places, the evil would find all living beings unprepared.

Not her, though. She would be ready to fight it again whenever it would happen. Tomorrow or in hundred years.

He felt like an idiot. Annoyed about himself, Zeke stared at the message on his cellphone. Of course, they wouldn't come home. It was always the same old story. They made promises, and they reneged them. What did they care that it was his 21st birthday? They had never cared about any birthday, neither about holidays or his graduation from highschool.

So, why did it still hurt? Why did he still hope that one day things would change? That his parents finally would show him at least some love?

He looked up when footsteps came closer. Casey Connor, cute boy, but a tiny bit too geeky. No one he wanted to hang around with. On the other hand... „Hey, Connor. Any plans for the weekend?“

„Me?!“ The boy looked surprised. „Dunno. Maybe a short trip to Akron. The photo exhibition at the Art Museum sounds very interesting. Modern...“

„Or,“ Zeke interrupted him, „you do some clubbing tonight. There is this new nightclub in Columbus, the LUX. Ever checked it out?“

„No!“ Casey laughed, slightly embarrassed. „I guess I'm not a guy for clubbing.“

Zeke couldn't hide his grin. „Then it's about time to change your mind.“

Ethan stared down at his cheap Whiskey. What a day! Once again, he had to admit that he was not born to make friends. Or even fall in love with someone.

It had been like this since he could remember. He had always been a lone wolf without home and family. Had never stayed anywhere long enough, had never been ready to let someone closer in his life.

To think that it might be different this time had been naive. He grabbed his glass, slugged down the acrid drink. He should have known better. Once a wolf, always a wolf.
