Ephraim grabbed for the bottle of home-brewed booze again. He was living in the underground for so long already that his former life was not more than a faint memory anymore. He had had a job once, a wife, a son. And even he secretly had dreamed about more, a career, a bigger house, best schools for Zack, he had to admit today that his life had been a good one.

Another sip of booze, and hopefully, he would drift away in blurred dreams, leaving darkness and the omnipresent danger emanating from the vampires behind for an hour or two.

„Will you ever grow up,“ Zeke snarled, unable to hide his amused grin. „Get up; seems you need a hot shower.“

„Great idea.“ Casey's blue eyes sparkled. „Will you join me?“

When Zeke stopped the GTO in front of the police station, Casey's eyes widened. „What are we doing here?“

„Just give me a minute, I need to talk with a friend.“

„Oh. What did he do?“

Zeke chuckled amused. „Don't worry, he's one of the good guys.“

„Wait! You have a friend, working for the police?“

„It can never hurt to have diverse relations. If you ever get into trouble, just tell me and I will put in a good word for you.“

„You are joking.“ Casey stayed skeptical. Still laughing, Zeke left the GTO.
