"Okay, before I tell you, you have to promise not to be mad," Casey said.
Zeke put his beer back onto the table, watching him with narrowed eyes. „Sounds as if you've done something stupid.“
„No! But last weekend, when I told you that I would go to Akron because of this exhibition...“ Casey shrugged. „Well, I met with James.“
Heat was rushing through Zeke's body. „Shit, Casey, tell me that this is not true. You didn't meet a guy you only know from a dubious forum on the internet. Without telling anyone about it? Have you lost your mind?“
„I don't need a second mom, Zeke,“ Casey huffed defiantly, „who makes a fuss about just everything. I am fine; nothing has happened.“
„I am not making a fuss,“ Zeke snapped. „I am just wondering if you have never heard about all the perverts in the net, looking for an inexperienced, desperate guy. How could you be so careless?“
„Okay, Zeke, stop!!“ Casey jumped up from the old couch, his eyes sparkling with anger. „I am not desperate, and I am not that stupid. James and I do chat already for some months, and actually, it was my idea finally to meet up.
We had a pizza, went to a movie. And no, he has not tried to make me drunk and lure me into a shabby motel room for some pervert sex games.“ His face had turned red with rage. „Because he is a nice guy, and I like him. Next weekend, we will meet again, maybe go to an open-air concert in Columbus. And I am not asking for your permission.“
Feeling helpless, Zeke balled his hands into fists. Never before had he seen Casey so out of rage. And maybe justifiable so. Did he have the right to tell Casey how to live his life? It was hard enough for him in more than just one way. At school, he was the victim of the jock's bullying. His parents loved him in their way, but in Zeke's eyes, they were much too overprotecting, almost smothering him with their care. And finally, the awareness that he was not interested in the slightest in girls, not in the way a teenage boy of his age usually was.
Sometimes Zeke was still wondering how it had happened that such a close bond was grown between the two of them during the last months. But yes, he cared for Casey, in a way he usually didn't care for others. And the thought of Casey being together with a dubious stranger he didn't know anything about was somehow disturbing.
„Do you know his real name,“ he finally asked. „Maybe we could check at least his background. Just to be sure!“
Casey gasped for air. „Zeke, what the heck is wrong with you today? If I didn't know better, I would suspect that you are jealous because I spent some time with another guy.“
Wow, he was... what? It didn't often happen that Zeke felt lost for words. Jealous? He? That was a ridiculous thought, wasn't it? He was not interested in Casey; they were friends, yes, but whatever he felt for him had nothing to do with... what? Love? Sex? Of course not!
Okay, he knew to enjoy himself, flirted with lots of girls, and sometimes even visited a gay club. Only because of the relaxed atmosphere, dating a girl could be so much more stressful, and sometimes he was just sick of this.
He also enjoyed hanging around with Casey, but he had never thought of more. Because his friendship with the little geek meant a lot for him, and overstepping the line would only destroy everything. He was not a guy for a serious relationship, and Casey deserved better than a fleetingly one-time-fuck.
„Oh shit!“ Casey's bewildered voice tore him out of his thoughts. „I am right, you are jealous!“
„I am not!“ Zeke turned his head away to avoid eye contact. „We are friends, and I am worried.“
„But there is no need to. I know about the danger lurking in the net, and I am not careless. James and I did chat for months, and yes, I did check out his background before I suggested a movie night.
He is a nice guy, we share some interests, and like me, he is grown up in a small town in Ohio, and he is gay. We have to deal with the same problems, and it feels great to talk openly about them with someone else. But I have made it clear from the beginning that I am not interested in any kind of relationship.“
Zeke stared at him with narrowed eyes. „So, you can't talk with me?“
Casey hesitated before shaking his head. „No, not about this topic.“
„Because of what? Who am I, a homophobic prick?“
„Geez, Zeke! Don't you get it? You are the one I am secretly dreaming about. The boy I want to be together with. But I knew you would kill me if you would ever find out, so I have decided to take what I can get. Your friendship. This is so much more that I have ever dared to hope for.“
When he noticed tears sparkling in Casey's eyes, Zeke couldn't hold back any longer. Ignoring his thoughts doing somersaults, he pulled him into his arms, holding him tight. „Fuck,“ he murmured, „it's not like you think. I am... I guess... I want you, too, for so long already. But it's not a good idea; one day, I will hurt you, and...“
„Shhh!“ Casey lifted his head, looking at him with a shy smile. „When this is a dream, can you please stop ruining it and just kiss me?“
