„Smith, wait a moment!“ Just when he wanted to leave the underground garage of the Mountain, Kurdy hurried down the hall. „Erin says, you are going to the school for Christmas?“
The little guy smiled. „Well, spending the evening with Sister Hannah and the children is more after my fancy than a party. Even if I'm sure that the cook will excel himself again, and Markus has promised some bottles of good, old whiskey.“
„Get that. I won't go neither this year, too many happy people.“ Kurdy stretched out his hand; the little snowglobe was glittering when he slowly moved it up and down. Golden snowflakes were twirling around a tiny winter landscape; a festively decorated Christmas tree, children playing in the snow, building a snowman. „This was supposed to be my gift for Elizabeth today.“ His voice low, hard to understand. „But she is dead and buried, and I have no use for it any longer. Take it for the children. I guess they might like it.“
„It is pretty,“ Smith agreed. „And I know they will love it.“ Absorbed in thoughts, he let his fingers wander over the glassy surface of the snowglobe. „But why don't you come with me to give it to the children by yourself? Spending Christmas at the old monastery might soothe your soul.“
Kurdy's face darkened. „Not in the mood for your shit today, whatever this asshole of God is telling you, I don't care!“
Smith smiled. „God keeps quiet at the moment,“ he said. „But I can still remember Elizabeth's words when I took her to the school for the first time. 'Up to now, I wasn't sure if all our struggling it not just the desperate try to delay the inevitable. But this place gives me back hope that not everything is lost.'“
Kurdy stared at him with narrowed eyes for quite a while before he finally relaxed. „Give me a minute, it's freezing cold outside, and I will need my coat.“
