Smith opened the door to Kurdy's room only a crack. To his relief, he found his friend lying on his bed, bundled up in a stack of blankets, reading a book. „Oh, good, here you are!“

Startled, the big guy winced slightly. „Fuck, Smith, what the hell are you doing here?“

„I started to worry about you. I've expected to find you at the cafeteria for the Christmas party. You never say no to a Whiskey and some cookies.“

Kurdy's face darkened. „Christmas is not the time for a party,“ he snarled. „It's the time to remember your family.“ Shit! He cursed inwardly when he realized the meaning of his words. To say something like this to someone who could remember nothing of his past anymore was more than rude. „Sorry. I didn't mean to...“

Smith stepped into the room, smiling. „It's okay. I know.“

„It's just, Christmas is a difficult time for me.“ Kurdy closed his eyes when his thoughts drifted back. „We didn't have much money, so, not a decent Christmas meal, no pretty wrapped gifts under a big tree. But there was a candle and some fir branches at the table, and we got handmade toys from my dad. Because the room mostly was cold, my mom made hot cacao, and we bundled up under our blankets while she read to us.“

He opened his eyes again, pointing at the dog-eared old book in his lap. „Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol. The only book we have had at home. The only still existing connection to my past. It's fifteen years already that the world broke apart, and the memories of the old world start to vanish. But Christmas will stay forever."
