Since Erin could remember, Markus had been her best friend; he had been the one who had kept her alive after the Big Death had turned the world around for every child. When he told her that she was the one he trusted most and made her the sub-leader of the Mountain, she felt like the happiest woman. Though her feelings for him were different, she knew better than to talk about it. Markus had found his life task long ago: to build a new world. There was no place for a romantic relationship.
But one day, she started to realize that he had secrets even from her, hidden in the locked areas of the Mountain. When she tried to talk about it with him, he smiled, but she could sense the tension behind it. „The Mountain was a military area long before the Big Death,“ he said. „The army stored tons of biological and chemical weapons in the depth of the mountain. There are dossiers about experiments to make them more effective. We don't know much about all this, so I think it is better to be careful and to keep these areas closed.“
„But you go there often,“ she confronted him.
He looked uneasy. „Only for short inspections; I want to make sure that everything is okay inside there.“
„At least we could cut off electricity and other supply circuits.“ She couldn't let it rest. „It's a waste of resources.“
„Okay. I will talk this through with the technic crew.“ But she could read it in his eyes that this was a lie.

She had always trusted Markus, did believe in him. And when she disagreed with his plans, she had talked about it openly. Never had she thought that she would ever spy on him, follow him secretly when he vanished in the locked area again.
Now she was hiding here, in one of the empty storage rooms of the Mountains for hours already. Not able to move, to able to think clearly. The truth was just too horrible. She felt torn apart between her love and loyalty for Markus and the knowledge of a dreadful danger for the whole Mountain. No, the whole world.
A woman behind glass, an old woman, who was not supposed to live anymore.
Markus' voice, so sorrowful, so gentle. „We need to find a way to bring you out here. It's not safe any longer. Erin starts wondering; she is smart, she will find out one day.“
„Maybe it's time to tell her. You have kept this secret for yourself much too long.“
„I'm afraid she might not be able to understand. The bond between us is grown in fifteen years, but for her, for everyone else, you'll only be the woman who carries the virus inside.“
In a chill shock of nameless fear, Erin had taken flight, not caring about Markus' voice, calling out for her. After fifteen years of fighting to get her life back, her world was broken into pieces again. And she wasn't sure if she would be able to move on this time.
