Finally alone, soothing silence, darkness. Theo dropped down onto her bed, closing her eyes. But there was no escape from all the pictures running through her mind. So much had happened today, so many things she had said and done. People got hurt because of her, a helpless guy shot.

She curled up like a cat, tormented by always the same questions. Was it right what she was doing? Was it worth it? Maybe she was only chasing a rainbow, called 'The end of the world.' A place of safeness and abundance, where electricity and running water were a matter of course, and no one needed to worry about the next meal, about medical care, and icy winter storms. A place for a new start.

She refused to think about it, but deep inside, she worried that this place might not exist, only a rumor like so many others, sprouted out of desperation and loneliness. People needed something to believe in; she had learned this already ages ago. When the Big Death had turned the world around, she had been a shy, skinny, thirteen years old girl. But instead of given up, like so many others around her, she had learned to do what needed to be done. No mercy; this was not the time for weakness. But one day, she would wake up out of this nightmare, and the world would be like it was supposed to be again, and she could turn back into the little girl she had been once, full of innocent future dreams.

„One day,“ Theo whispered, finally allowing the tears to run, „one day.“

For the moment, she had no other choice. The people living in Clearwater needed a leader, someone who told them what to do next, someone who offered a perspective for the future. Sometimes she hated herself for what she did every day anew, how she played with other people's lives. But someone needed to do it, or the world would be lost forever.

Title: Inner struggles

Meghan eyed the young man thoughtfully, who was standing in front of the window, which separated them for almost 15 years already. First, she had begged him to bring it to an end; she knew she was the living dead. Even when the virus didn't kill her like all the other adults, she carried it inside, ready to infect everyone who dared it to come closer to her. Her only chance to live was a hermetical sealed lab for the rest of her days.

She hadn't been ready for that, had longed to die. But Markus was young, still full of hope. „I will find a way to help you,“ he had promised her. Meghan smiled when she remembered. Fifteen years, but she didn't regret it. Despite the glass separating them, there was a special bond grown between her and the young man. Over the years she had turned into his best friend, his confidante; she knew all about his doubts and nightmares, he never showed anyone else. All the people living in the Mountain trusted and admired him; he was their leader, ready to give them hope because hope was all that had been left.

„Anything wrong,“ she asked him, sensing the tension inside him.

Slowly he turned his head, looking at her. „I don't know,“ he admitted.

She pressed her fingers against the cold glass. „Do you want to talk about it?“

A weak smile showed up on his lips. „Guess this is why I am here.“ The smile vanished. „Simon and Gerald, they didn't make it back from their last trip.“

„I'm sorry to hear that.“ What else could she say; it had happened before, it would happen again. The world outside the Mountain was a dangerous one; this was why Markus still hesitated to look for contact with other groups.

„They were good guys,“ Markus said. „Simon was living in the Mountain from the beginning; I could trust him blindly. That's why I did send him on this mission. The last time we talked, he told me that he has important news.“

Meghan wished to be able to hold him. „Don't blame yourself; it's not your fault.“

"I know!" Markus hesitated. „Before he died, he told two strangers about the Mountain. They did arrive about two hours ago with the news. At the moment Sarah gives them a guided tour. But Lee thinks it's better not to trust them.“

„What do you think,“ she asked, though she already knew the answer.

„They could easily have taken the jeep, it's of great value out there. Vanishing into thin air. But they buried Simon and did come here as he asked them to do.“ He kept quiet for a moment, resting his temple against the window. „They told me about a group of skinheads, living some miles away in a fabric hall. Obviously, they have imprisoned some people, plan to execute them.“ He breathed in shakingly. „Kurdy and Jeremiah, they ask me to help. Some men, some weapons. But that's not our business, isn't it? I can't risk the lives of people who trust me for some strangers.“

His eyes looked pleadingly now, looking for absolution, but she slowly shook her head. „Innocent people, Markus, children maybe. The future of the world. You will have to find a way to save them, or you will never be able to forgive yourself.“
