Zeke's eyes were resting on his boyfriend surprised. „What are you trying to tell me? You've changed your mind about going to Columbus this weekend? But it was long-planned.“

Casey shrugged apologizing. „Sorry, I can't. My mom decided that it's time for the annual spring cleaning.“

„Understand. And what is this supposed to mean?“

„That we will clear out our attic today.“

„Wait!“ Zeke smirked. „We will?“

„Well.“ Casey smiled at him with sparkling blue eyes. „If you help me, we will be ready within an hour, or two.“

:::

About four hours later, Zeke was sitting at the kitchen counter of the Connor's, enjoying a coffee and his second slice of homemade apple pie with cream.

„Boys,“ Mrs. Connor said, „you did a great job. Hard to believe how much stuff one can collect over the years. Maybe next weekend we could have a look at the garage.“

While Casey helplessly rolled his eyes, Zeke inwardly laughed, taking another bite of his apple pie. To be honest, he didn't mind helping out. He was always welcome in the Connor's home; they had respected him from the first moment, which he couldn't say from many other people. And it was always fun to be together with Casey, even if it meant to spend a wonderful spring afternoon at a dusty, dim attic.

They had joked and giggled all the time while sorting the most strange the stuff. But the highlight had been the discovery of some old suitcases and boxes. „Oh, I guess, this is my grandfather's stuff,“ Casey said. „I've never really got to know him; he died when I was still a toddler, but my mom says we resemble each other. He was a photo geek like I am. I wonder what is hidden in these old boxes.“

„We could risk a glance,“ Zeke suggested. „Maybe we can find some compromising baby photos. You, naked on a bearskin.“

Casey smirked. „I hope not; my grandpa was not that geeky.“

Only a moment later a loud outcry made Zeke wince, and his look fell into the small suitcase Casey had opened. A lot of old newspapers, and... „Oh! Seems as if you've just scared this little family half to death.“

Casey breathed out deeply, chuckling slightly embarrassed. „They are not supposed to be here,“ he said, watching the mice babies cowering close to their mom as if they were looking for shelter. „My dad won't be amused to find out.“

„Maybe we don't have to tell him. We could bring the suitcase down to the GTO. I don't mind giving the mice a new home in my garage until they are old enough to go their way.“

„Oh, yeah?“ Casey's eyes sparkled, relieved. „That sounds like a good plan.“ He eyed the baggage in front of them. „I just hope there are no more surprises like this hidden inside them.“

But it turned out quickly that most of them empty or filled with musty-smelling clothes. Finally there was only one big trunk left, grey-brown, battered edges, and two big hinged locks.

„This one looks interesting,“ Zeke said, „think your mom would mind if I keep it?“

Casey grinned wide. „And I am called a geek. What the heck do you want to do with it?“

„Dunno,“ Zeke admitted, „it's just... oh, look what's inside!“

„Holy shit!“ Casey jumped forward to have a better look. „That's the old photo stuff of my grandpa. I didn't know that it still exists.“ Full of excitement, he pulled out one of the old cameras. „Woah, it's weighty. And look at these objectives. So strange. I wonder if this stuff is still working.“

„We could find out.“ Inwardly Zeke laughed; yes, others might call Casey a geek because of his love for photography, but he always enjoyed seeing him so hyper. „The attic is cleared out; I guess your mom won't mind when we take off for the rest of the afternoon. We could go to the lake for a little photo session.“

:::

In the end, this plan got put off until the next day because Mrs. Connor offered hot cacao, coffee, and homemade apple pie. She never missed a chance to spoil Zeke a bit; he was a good boy, no matter what others might think about him, and it was a shame that no one was there to take care of him.

„I hope you don't mind that I did ruin your weekend plans,“ she said, watching the boy enjoying their apple pie.

„It's okay, mom,“ Casey reassured her, „We have had a lot of fun today. Did you know about grandpa's old photo stuff? We discovered it in one of the trunks.“

„It's still there? I admit I've had completely forgotten about it. But I guess there must be still more, all his photos, somewhere in the storeroom.“

„Understand, the secret family stuff.“ Zeke grinned.

Mrs. Connor laughed. „He was more a nature guy, but I remember he took some cute baby photos of Casey, too. If you are interested, I could see if I can find them.“

The grin deepened. "Oh yes, please," Zeke said while Casey rolled his eyes, well knowing that there was no escape.

„She's so small,“ Jason whispered, looking into the baby carrier on the couch.

Casey smiled. „But she's a strong little girl. It's okay to touch her; just be gentle, and you won't scare her.“

The little boy bit his lower lip, as always when he felt uneasy while stretching out his finger. When he caressed her cheek, Marie opened her eyes, stared at him for a moment before a smile spread over her face.

Jason giggled delightfully. „She likes me!“

„Of course, you are her big brother; how can she not.“ Zeke grabbed Casey's hand to squeeze it. If there ever had been any doubts about taking Marie into their little family, they vanished into thin air at this moment.
