It was a warm, bright summer day, and as so often, Frodo was lying under his favorite tree, reading. He knew the other hobbit boys called him a bit weird because he loved these fantasy stories that much instead of frolicking around with them in the nearby lake. But what did he care? As much as he loved the Shire, one day, he wanted to see more from the world, maybe undergo an adventure as Bilbo had done years ago. And until his time would come, he could at least read about far away lands, about dwarves and elves.
Suddenly he put his book down, listening keenly. No, he hadn't been wrong, there was a rustling in the bushes nearby, and the branches were vibrating. „Pip,“ he asked,“ is this you? Do come out, I can see you.“
Silence, and Frodo was already wondering if maybe it only had been the wind, but then a little hobbit boy stepped forward, looking at him with eyes wide open.
„Hello, what are you doing here?“
„Picking flowers for my mom's birthday.“
Now Frodo noticed the bunch of various wildflowers in his hands. „Oh, I see, that's a nice idea. But I guess you are a bit too young to go near the lake all alone.“
„I'm not alone; you are here. You will save me if I fall in.“
Frodo laughed. „Would I?“
„Sure.“ The young hobbit nodded eagerly. „Like you did last year when I stumbled over a root. My knee was bleeding, but you carried me home.“
Suddenly realization hit him. „Oh, you are the youngest son of the Gamgees. It's Samwise, isn't it?“
The little one beamed all over his face. „Yes, Master Frodo, I am, Sam.“
Smiling, he shut his book and got up. „Well, Sam, you are a good step away from home. C'mon, I will keep you company; make sure that you don't get lost!“
