Jeremiah put his spoon down, eying Gina thoughtfully. The face of the young woman seemed to shimmer in the light of the candle. „What do you mean?“ Deep inside, he already knew the answer. This was the moment he had refused to think about since he did move in into Gina's little house at sea.
Living together with her for some weeks had felt so normal; he had been able not to think about the Mountain, about the desperate fight for freedom and peace. He was just a young man who enjoyed some time together with the woman he loved.
Gina smiled, unable to hide the sadness in her eyes. „I guess I am ready. The boat is finished; I've hoarded enough gas to dare the trip.“
Jeremiah swallowed down the lump in his throat. „Up to the horizon,“ he murmured.
„And behind,“ she agreed. „You may call me a dreamer, but there is still hope, isn't it that somewhere in the world is still a place, untouched by the virus. I've promised my dad to find out.“
He kept quiet, well knowing that nothing would change her mind. Her plan sounded like a suicide mission, but it was the obsession that had kept her alive all the years. They all needed something like this to move on.
„You could come with me,“ her soft voice tore him out of his thoughts.
Slowly he shook his head. „You know, I can't. I have to go back to the Mountain; the skinheads and other groups get stronger every day, and it's only a matter of time until Markus will have to fight for what he does believe into. A new world, a better one, a future for the children." He wasn't even sure if it was worth all this, all the loss and pain, shattered hopes every day anew. It was much easier just to move on. One day after the other, without thinking too much about tomorrow. "After all he has done for me, I can't turn my back on him now.“
„Don't worry, I know. We all have to follow our inner voice,“ she whispered, grabbing for his hand. „I will sail tomorrow at sunset. That will leave still some hours.“
