„I'm feeling so bad,“ Mrs. Connor said, clutching her mug with coffee with both hands. „I know I should be proud and happy. Casey has worked so hard for it, and a job as a photo reporter for the USA Today is all he has ever dreamed about.
But I can't stand the thought of him, jetting around the world from one area of conflict to the other, surrounded by unknown dangers. All the horrible things he will see. Why couldn't he take the job at the Cincinnati Post?“
Zeke kept quiet for a moment, not knowing what to say. He could understand Casey's decision; the Post would have been only a job, USA Today though offered the chance for something much bigger. But he could also understand the concern of Mrs. Connor; a part of him felt like her. It had been a shock when Casey had told him this morning about his changed future plans; he was still not sure about it how to deal with it.
Finally he sighed inwardly and put his hand onto Mrs. Connor's arm. „Casey is strong and smart enough to know his limits,“ he said. „And if he can't stand it any longer, he will know that there is a place where he will be surrounded by all love and comfort he needs. And he will come back home. Always.“
„Oh, Zeke,“ Mrs. Connor murmured, putting her forehead onto his shoulder when she started sniffing slightly. All he could do was to hold her tight, fighting his own tears back.
