„Casey?“ Zeke crossed the road when he noticed him at the parking lot of the mall standing beside a blue Audi. „Is this you? You are back?“
„Oh, hello, Zeke. Yes.“ Slowly the boy closed the trunk and turned around. Slightly shocked, Zeke noticed instantly that, no, he was not a boy, the so familiar geek, any longer. Still the same blue eyes, but besides that, he had changed a lot. Gone the checkered shirts and the too wide denim; gone the camera around his neck. He looked like a self-conscious young man. „ I'm back for my ma's birthday next weekend; she turns fifty.“
„Understand.“ Zeke nodded. „You're looking great.“
Casey blinked. „Thanks. You too.“
This was ridiculous. Embarrassing. Suddenly Zeke felt like an idiot. What had he expected? How was it possible that Casey's presence alone did make his heart beat quicker, after all, what had happened two years ago? Casey had decided to leave everything behind and to start a new life, and obviously, he was much happier nowadays. „Yeah,“ he murmured, smirking. „Nice to meet you. But I'm in a hurry; need to go.“
When he turned around to escape this situation, Casey's words hold him back. „I'm sorry.“
„What are you talking about?“
„Me, cheating on you. Peter. I'm sorry, but he was so different from you.“
Zeke eyed him with narrowed eyes. „I hope so. I never had the ambitions to be an arrogant college prick.“
When Casey winced visibly, Zeke cursed inwardly. No, it made no sense to let all this get to him that close again. In the end, it would only hurt both of them. „Sorry. Your choice. Obviously he makes you happy, this is what counts, right?“
„Well, to be honest, we did break up rather sooner than later; some weeks after I moved to Chicago.“ Casey shrugged. „You are right; he was a prick. But back then... Peter was the first guy who didn't hide his interest in me. We went into clubs and movies together. He flirted with me openly. It felt so good, not to hide my true self any longer.“ He paused, sighing. „I know, that's not an excuse. I should have told you, but I was afraid of your reaction.“
„Because of what?“ Zeke frowned. „Because I might hit you? I know I am not perfect, but I never was one of the bullies, okay? There was no reason to betray me in the way you did.“ He felt so churned up, much more than he had expected.
Back then it had almost torn him apart to find out that Casey had left him without even saying a word. He had trusted him, more than anyone else before, even if he had never told him. But he had left him into his life, his garage, his secret refuge. Casey had been the first, the only one he could endure around him for longer than only a night or two.
It had taken a while to get over the betray, but finally he had started to get his life under control. Had accepted it, that he probably was not a guy for a long-lasting relationship; sooner or later, he was alone again. He had learned to make the best out of it, and his life was better now than it had been back then.
When he noticed guilt and sorrow in Casey's eyes, he breathed in deeply to calm down again. He always had only wanted to make him smile because his smile was beautiful, and he didn't have a reason to do so often. „Hey, it's okay. I guess you're right; I wasn't easy to handle back then.“
„Oh, I never regretted anything. You never made any promises, and we have had the best sex I could imagine. But I realized more and more that this is not enough. I wanted a partner at my side who was not ashamed of me.“
„I never was ashamed of you,“ Zeke protested. „I was more ashamed of my feelings for you. A coming out in Herrington, this was impossible back then. Every time we met in my garage, I was afraid that someone would find out. But I wasn't able to let you go. And sometimes I was thinking about it how it would be to leave everything behind. Together on the road with you, two rebels on their way into nowhere.“ Slightly smiling, he shook his head. „I knew this would never happen because you were a good boy with a brilliant mind, much too smart to ruin your life for someone like me. It was the right decision to leave me.“
Casey had listened in silence; now, he swallowed hard. „Why did you never say anything,“ he asked. „I thought, I'm only an interesting adventure for you; a new experience, you know, secret sex with the geek of Herrington High.“
„It was a new experience; I just didn't know how to deal with it. And I never was good with words.“
Casey smiled. „This has changed,“ he said.
„Maybe I finally did grow up a bit.“ Probably it was not a good idea, but he couldn't hold back. The chance to spend some time again with Casey was just too tempting. „It might be two years too late, but what do you think, we could meet at the Coyote Ugly tonight. At the weekend they have live music lately, unknown bands, but often a pleasant surprise. We could have a beer, or two, chat a bit. And find out if still can be friends, after all.“
To his relief, Casey hesitated only a split of a second before he nodded. „Sounds as if we'll have our first date."
