„Hello, Casey!“
The young boy with the long green apron lowered the garden hose and jerked around. „Mom?! What are you doing here?“
Mrs. Conner smiled. „I was clearing out the porch this morning and decided that some colorful flowers would make it even more homely. What do you think, white and dark red wave petunias or mandevillas and hibiscus? The petunias would fit well to the color of the house, but I do love the exotic touch of tropical plants.“
Casey smirked. „God, Mom, this is so embarrassing.“
„Buying flowers?“
„You know what I'm talking about. You, still acting like a mother hen. I will go to college soon, remember? I'm almost eighteen."
„I know,“ Mrs. Conner agreed, smiling. „And I have to admit that I am curious. You never were interested in gardening before, so, you, taking a summer job at Petitti's was a big surprise. I'm still wondering about the reason.“
„They pay well; I need the money for college. That's a good reason, don't you think so?“
„Hey, Case.“ A young boy with shortcut brown hair and a bright smile stepped closer, wearing a similar apron like Casey. „Interested in a trip to Annie's milkbar later? My treat.“
The uneasiness, when Casey turned around to him was hard to overlook. „Ähm... no, not today. It's Friday.“
„Understand. Family evening. Good boy.“
„Oh, shut up.“ Now Casey blushed deeply. „It's nothing wrong with that.“
„No, of course not. But you don't know what you are missing. Annie makes the most delicious chocolate nut muffins.“ He blinked teasingly. „Your sweet tooth would love them. But okay, maybe next week, then. Have a nice weekend.“
Casey noticed his mom following the guy with her eyes while he put off the apron, waved one last time, and left the greenhouse. „That's Zeke, the son of the chief clerk. He's jobbing here as well,“ he explained before she could ask anything.
But of course, she wasn't willing to give in so easily. „He seems to be a nice guy.“
„He's okay.“
„And he was obviously flirting with you.“
Casey rolled his eyes. „Oh, stop that. We are co-workers, that's all. And I'm not interested in a complicated relationship; I need to prepare for MIT.“
„Of course.“ Mrs. Connor nodded. „I'm just wondering about the photos I saw on your desk last week. The boy on them looked very much like Zeke.“ When Casey looked shocked, she put her hand onto his shoulder, reassuringly. „I know, your dad is still hoping that you might change your mind one day, and date a girl like Delilah Profitt. But if you ask me, your choice is the better one.
And now, flowers. Petunias or tropical plants for the porch? You are the expert.“
