„We haven't seen the skinheads for a while,“ Kurdy said. „I wonder if they finally have given up and just moved on.“
Smith looked up from the campfire. „It's only the quiet before the storm. God says, the summer will end, and the autumn will get bloody.“
The big guy put his mug with coffee back onto the trunk beside him, inwardly cringing. So far, it had been a nice, relaxing day, but Smith's words ruined everything. Even if he didn't want to admit it, Kurdy knew well enough, that these mysterious prophecies often enough turned out to be right.
Hopefully, not this time. He thought about all the women and children who had found refuge at the Mountain. And the often much too young guys he tried to train in shooting and fighting. They did their best but were still much too inexperienced for a severe conflict.
Feeling low, Kurdy got up. „Then it might be a good idea to go back to the Mountain,“ he said. „I will ask Markus to arrange some more training hours.“ He glared at Smith with narrowed eyes. „And this time you should better join us. Everyone needs to learn to defend himself when it is necessary.“
It was disturbing that Smith, the most pacific guy Kurdy had met for ages, nodded slowly. „Yeah, I guess you might be right.“
