Daryl glared at Carol with dark eyes.

„Hope,“ he repeated her last word.
„How can you still talk about hope? The world was a mess even before the Walker did take over it. Now it has turned into hell, and nothing good will survive.“

Carol watched him full of sympathy; she could understand what he had to go through. She had felt the same after she had lost Sophia, paralyzed, and full of hate. It had been a long way until she had started to realize that hope was the only thing that could make her move on.

Patterson noticed the sadness in Jane's eyes and didn't need to ask for the reason. Again the young woman had hoped to find out more about her past; again the answer to the riddle just had raised even more questions. Hard to imagine how alone she had to feel since the day she had been found at Time Square, without memories, naked, covered with mysterious tattoos.

Later Patterson couldn't say what had gotten into her but at this moment it felt like the only thing she could do to offer at least some comfort. She bent forward and kissed her.

The moment the team had left the laboratory in a hurry, Agent Patterson leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. Only some minutes of rest before she would go back to her task.

The last tattoo she had decoded only one hour ago. A spread eagle, a moon, and some hieroglyphs whose meaning had been a pretty nice challenge. It had lasted for almost two days without much sleep to find the solution.

Not the first time that this happened. Since Jane had appeared from close to scratch, without any memory of her past, every part of her body covered with mysterious tattoos, Patterson didn't get much sleep anymore. From the very first moment, she felt attracted by the young woman. Despite her strange situation so strong, moving on without complaining. Wildly resolved to find out the truth, no matter the consequences.

Only sometimes the shell Jane had built up around her got some cracks, and uneasiness and sadness were sparkling in her eyes.

Then Patterson wished she would be able to give her back her peace of mind, to make her smile again. But all she could do was to do her job as well as possible.

Shocked, Steve stared at the plushy costume in a glaring orange in front of him; black trousers, a big head, two white beaver teeth in the middle, and a huge tail. That was a joke, wasn't it?

„C'mon, it's fun, “ Danny said. „And the girls will love you.“

Steve cursed inwardly, wondering how he had gotten into this situation. Grace had looked so sad this morning when she told that Benny, the Beaver wouldn't be around for the softball game today. „But he's the mascot of our team,“ she had sniffed. „How can we win without him?“

„What's happened?“

Danny had shrugged. „Pete, Holly's father, usually takes over this part. He had an accident, broke his arm.“

„And no one else can take over his part?“

„No one would fit into the costume. Though ...“ Danny had eyed Steve up and down and grinned sheepishly. This alone should have warned him. „Do you already have plans for this afternoon?“

Grace had beamed at him, and instead of asking for more details, Steve had agreed.

„I will make up for it later,“ Danny whispered into his ear.
„Thanks for doing this.“
