Casey hit the brake of his bike so hard that he almost somersaulted. With open mouth, he stared at the house in front of him, painted in dark green, with warm yellow window frames. Annie's Bistro; it had always been his favorite place to go after school. Not only because Annie made the best chocolate-nut muffins. The bistro was a bit of the track; most students from Herrington High preferred the modern bars near the school. And no one did bother him.
Some weeks ago Zeke had stared to keep him company. At Annie's they could hang around without dreading to get noticed. Only Annie was smart enough to find out about their secret. „No need to be ashamed of it, boys, love knows no limits,“ she had told them, smiling wide, while placing another muffin in front of Casey, and a coffee, only a touch of milk, no sugar in front of Zeke. „My treat. Enjoy.“
Feeling dizzy, Casey stared at the windows in front of him, covered with old newspapers. He couldn't even get a glance at the inside to find out what was going on. Suddenly he felt tears burning in his eyes. This couldn't be true. Annie was a confidant, a friend, almost like a second mother for them, she would never have closed her beloved bistro without even telling them about it.
Suddenly the door was torn open; a middleaged man in a suit rushed out and almost crashed into Casey. „What are you doing here,“ he barked. „Can't you park your bike anywhere else?“
„Sorry,“ Casey murmured. „I am waiting for a friend. We wanted to meet at Annie's. Is the bistro closed today?“
„Not today. Forever. Was about time.“
„But why? I can't believe that Annie would give it up so quickly without any reason.“
The guy eyed him slightly irritated. „This bistro was a devourer of money for a long time already. With my mother in the hospital, it's only reasonable finally to close it.“
Casey paled. „Annie is in the hospital?“
„An accident last night on her way home. What a trouble; a concussion, and she broke her arm. And I had to cancel an important meeting to deal with everything. At least she needs to understand now, that it is irresponsible that she's still living on her own.“
Slightly huffing the man pulled a key out of his pocket, locked the main door twice. "Guess you and your friend will need to look for another place to hang out." With a fleetingly wave he finally turned around and went over to a shiny sports car.
„Woah, that's a cool one, a Mustang GT500. I would...“ Zeke's cheery voice fell silent. „What the heck is this?“
„Annie is gone,“ Casey sniffed, not able to hold his tears back anymore.
Worried, Zeke stepped closer. „What are you talking about?“
„She had an accident. Needs to stay in the hospital for a while.“
„Oh, good.“
„What?“ Frowning Casey stared at his boyfriend. „You think, these are good news? Annie, our bistro... don't you get it? It's closed forever.“
„Oh, hey, hey.“ Zeke put his hand on Casey's arm. „Annie's a fighter, I am sure she won't give up so easily. Give her a while, and she will be up and about again, back in her bistro.“
„Not, when her son has a say.“
„She has a son? I was sure she's living all alone.“
Casey shrugged. „He's an ass. I'm afraid, he's already thinking about a nursing home.“
„A nursing home?“ Zeke huffed loudly. „Annie? Hard to imagine. It's not that serious that she has turned into a nursing case overnight, isn't it?“
„I don't know. Her son talked about a broken arm and a concussion.“
„Okay.“ Zeke made a decision. „Let's go to the hospital and find out what exactly is going on here. I wouldn't be surprised if her son tries to take advantage of the situation, and Annie doesn't even know about it.“ He put his arm around Casey's shoulder, not caring if someone might notice. "Hey, calm down again, okay. We won't let it happen, that this ass closes our Bistro and send Annie into a nursing home."
