With tears in her eyes, Brett looked at the beer Cruz was holding out to her. „Heineken,“ she said,“ Otis loved this shit.“

„I miss him, too. Without him singing under the shower, the apartment is much too quiet.“

Brett couldn't help but smile at the memory. God, how much she had hated it, especially early in the morning, after a long and hard night, when she could barely keep her eyes open. But Otis had always been in a good mood. To think that he was gone now, forever...

Killed by the only enemy in his life. He had been a firefighter with all his heart. He had never hesitated and had risked everything. So many people owed their lives to him.

And now he had to die trying to save a run-down mattress factory? A fire that would never have happened if not for a much too greedy businessman who had ignored all the required safety measures to save some money.

„This is not fair,“ Brett murmured, closing her eyes. „I wonder if our job is worth it; we risk our lives every day... For what? Maybe the price is too high.“

Cruz dropped down on the old couch beside her, clinging his beer against hers. „You can get drunk tonight, morn about him. That's okay. But tomorrow, you will be out there again, do what needs to be done. No matter if someone deserves your help or not. Because...“

Cruz paused, taking a sip of his beer. „Because this is what Otis would do.“
