Smith watched them dancing to the slow music. Erin was wearing a dark-blue dress tonight, and Markus his uniform. On his lips a light smile, while he held her in a gentle embrace.
They looked like the happy couple they would never be.
Erin was Markus' deputy, his confidant; no one knew him as she did. He trusted her blind, even more than Lee, or Kurdy, or Jeremiah. But he wasn't aware how much she loved him. This would be her secret forever.
Because Markus was the leader of the Mountain, the keeper of the world's future, there was no place for love in his life.
Suddenly feeling sad, Smith turned around and left the cafeteria.
