„We could go by plane,“ Casey suggested, “That would give us some more hours in New York.“
To his surprise, Zeke's face darkened while he shook his head. „Driving with the GTO will be so much more fun.“
„Geez. You can't live a weekend without your car? C'mon, that's so stupid.“
„Well, then maybe you should better go alone to check out this photo school,“ Zeke snapped. „I couldn't care less about it.“
„Ähm.“ Casey frowned, feeling confused. „You can't be serious. We have been planning this trip for two months already. And it was for sure not only because of the School of Art.“
Silence for a while; finally, Zeke sighed. „No, it was not, sorry. I want to go to New York with you, and we would have a hell of a lot of fun. But not by plane; that's a no-go.“
„Because of what?“ Casey blinked, surprised. „Fear of flying? But that's not very rational. On a highway, the chances for a severe accident are much higher.“
„I know the statistics.“ Zeke shrugged. „But I can't help it. Makes me feel uneasy when I can't control things. I have owned the GTO for some years and am an experienced driver. But I can't handle the situation on a plane; who knows, maybe the pilot is drunk, or overtired, or he suddenly gets sick...“ He paused, shaking his head again. "No," he added. "Just no!"
Casey eyed his friend thoughtfully; he could feel there was more than this. But as much as he wanted to ask, he knew better. It was never a good idea to press Zeke too hard; probably, he trusted him more than anyone else, but there still were a lot of secrets he refused to talk about. With his past, not a big surprise.
„Okay,“ he finally agreed. „The GTO then. I choose the music.“
To his relief, Zeke's face brightened, and he laughed. „That's only fair.“
