„We still need to buy a little gift for Stokes' birthday,“ Casey reminded his friend. „Any ideas?“
„Maybe a CD of this punk band she likes so much,“ Zeke pondered. „The Casualties. Though I guess we will have to go to Akron for this. Maybe we better go for a book?“
Casey glanced at the bookstore on the other side of the mall. „Hm. Margaret Atwood; The Handmaid's Tale. I've heard it's a good one. But I don't know; a book is a boring gift, don't you think so?“
Zeke shrugged. „Dunno. Usually, I didn't care enough for other people to make gifts.“
„You were such an ass.“ Casey rolled his eyes. „At least some good came out of this Marybeth chaos.“ Even if it was already half a year ago and life did go on for the better for him because no one dared to call him a geek anymore, even the jocks showed him some respect since then; he still refused to call it an alien incident. This sounded just too weird.
Searching, he looked around, his eyes falling on the little shop for needlework he had never paid much attention to before. The window was decorated with hand-knitted pullovers, scarves, and... „Oh, these are perfect!“
„Hm?“ Zeke followed his gaze and blinked confused. „Now you've lost me.“
„The socks.“ Casey giggled. „Have you ever seen such colorful socks? They are great. I'm sure this is a gift Stokes has never gotten before.“
Oh shit. Zeke felt a loss for words when he thought about the girl, who, yes, had changed during the last months. She was not the moody outsider anymore who knew to keep others away from her with her sharp tongue. Since she was together with Stan, she had started to open up; she even seemed to enjoy hanging around with Casey and Zeke now and then. But what hadn't changed was her love for the color black. Black tees with the logo of her favorite punk bands, black jeans, black shoes. Black all over.
„Are you sure this is a good idea,“ he finally dared to ask. „She's not like Delilah, who enjoys an eye-catching outfit.“
„ Delilah?“ Casey burst into laughing. „No one would dare to buy hand-knitted socks for Delilah. But Stokes? I'm sure she will love them. The neon green ones look so cool; they will fit perfectly with the black denim she usually wears.“
His eyes sparkled with excitement while he headed for the shop, and all Zeke could do was follow him. Well knowing that, when Casey was wildly resolved like this, no one could convince him differently. All he could hope for was that the boy didn't remind his birthday, which was only two weeks away.
