Casey stopped dead when reaching the fine art section at the school's library. Usually, he was all alone here, and the sight in front of him made him giggle. Stokely, standing in front of the small window, balancing a heavy book on her head. When she noticed him, she winced, and the book fell onto the floor with a loud bang. „Geez, what the heck are you doing here,“ she hissed.
Casey picked the book up, placed it on the small table. He couldn't hide his amusement. „I just wanted to ask you the same. I've never seen you anywhere else but in the science section of the library. And usually, you are not trying to balance a book on your head.“
The girl stared at him with narrowed eyes, looking even more moody than usual. „If you tell anyone, you are in serious trouble,“ she threatened.
But Casey was not impressed; she was none of the bullies, more an outsider like he was. „I guess you have a good reason for doing it.“
„And that's none of your business!“
„No,“ Casey admitted. „But you can't blame me for being curious. C'mon, Stokes, you know I can keep a secret.“
„Yes, I think so.“ Stokely finally relaxed. „It's because of prom.“
„Oh.“
„Yeah. I didn't plan to go there; I'm not interested in dressing up like a Barbie and acting like a model, not even for one night. But now...“ She hesitated, and to Casey's surprise, she even blushed slightly. „Well, Stan invited me.“
„Woah! That's cool. But actually not a big surprise. You two were very close since this alien incident.“
She smirked. „But it never was a big thing. We never went to parties or shit. We hang around in Stan's room, watching movies, discussing books. Prom is... I wish he would have asked Delilah or any other of the cheerleader. They wouldn't embarrass him.“
„Oh,“ Casey said again. „Now I understand.“
„You understand what?“
„The book. On your head. You are trying to improve your posture.“ Casey smiled and put his hand on her arm. „But, Stokes, as hard as you try, you will never be like a cheerleader. So, don't put on a ridiculous show. Wear a flouncy black dress and purple shoes for prom, if this is what makes you feel good. Stay to yourself. Like you always did.“
Stokely shrugged, still looking unsure. „I wouldn't care when others bitch about me, but Stan...“
„Stan asked you to go to prom with him, right? None of the cheerleaders. It is that easy.“
After a short moment, a light smile turned up on Stokley's face. „Will you go to prom,“ she asked.
„Me?“ Now it was Casey's turn to smirk. „Who would want to go to prom with the school's geek?“
Her eyes sparkled. „You could ask Zeke. The geek and the rebel together at prom, and I bet no one would take any notice of me anymore.“
Casey blushed slightly but kept eye contact. „Sorry. But to be honest, Zeke and me, we already have other plans for prom night.“
„Oh!“ Now Stokely grinned openly. „Understand.“
