„But how can you do this? She's your Mom.“ Casey looked so shocked that it made Zeke cringe. This was the reason why he never talked about his past. It would only hurt Casey to know the whole truth.
„It's complicated. Can we leave it at that?“
„It's because of me, isn't it?“ Tears were sparkling in Casey's eyes. „You don't want her to know that you are gay and living together with your boyfriend.“
„Good God, no! This has nothing to do with you. I am...“ Zeke closed his eyes for a moment, looking for words. „I am just not interested to see her again.
I know it's difficult to understand for you. Your parents love you; they are always there for you. Mine? My dad left us when I was still a toddler; I can barely remember him. My mom? She wanted to enjoy her new freedom; was only interested in herself. Many parties, many guys. She left me alone all too often, and when this asshole of her lover beat me black and blue, she only turned her eyes away.
I don't know who finally called child welfare, probably one of the neighbors who felt bothered by the daily turmoil. When I was about nine, I saw her for the last time.“
It was only a small part of the truth. Inwardly more churned up than he wanted to admit, Zeke pulled Casey into his arms. „She was not interested in my back then. Now I am not interested in her anymore. I've learned to live alone, to make my own decisions. And it's good that way.“
„You are not alone any longer.“ Casey sniffed slightly. „I, and my parents, we are your family now. And we will never hurt you."
