Title: The most precious gift
Character: Samwise Gamgee
Word Count: 378
Prompt: Earth Day
Finished: 05.05.2022
:::
Sam leaned his head against the old tree, closing his eyes, to take in his surrounding. The smell of flowers, the cherry trees, starting to bloom, freshly mowed grass. The buzzing of the bees in their apiary, and the chirping of the birds, greeting the new day. Sam loved the early morning hours of springtime. Even more, because all this couldn't be taken for granted since the dark times.
He did remember all too well what the Shire had looked like when he did come home from his dangerous journey together with Frodo, Merry, and Pippin. The trees cut down, the corn burned, the flowers dried up, the fruits rotten, the water wells toxic.
It had lacerated the gardener's heart until he did remember Lady Galadriel's gift.
So much had happened since this day in the woods of Lothlorien, and he hadn't thought about the small wooden box in the depth of his backpack anymore. The elf-queen had given it to him as a farewell gift, and he could still remember the disappointment he had felt. All the others had gotten precious weapons and jewelry; he only elvish rope and this small box. As if she could read his mind, the lady had smiled, and he had felt so uncomfortable when she said: “You will find your courage, little hobbit, when it is necessary. But this gift is not for the warrior but the gardener. Cherish it well, and one day it might provide valuable service.“
How right she had been. When Sam had opened the box, he found elvish seeds. Without much hope, he had spread them all over the land. And the wonder has happened. Next spring, the Shire was back to old glory, the grass even greener than ever, the branches of the trees bent under the weight of the most delicious fruits, and flowers Sam had never seen before gave off their fragrance to attract bees and birds.
He opened his eyes again and smiled. Yes, Lady Galadriel was not only breathtakingly beautiful but smart. The elvish rope had saved Frodo's and his lives more than just once on their dangerous journey, but this small, unimpressive box had finally become the perfect gift for a gardener. Much more precious than any weapon and jewelry.
