It happened at one of their trips into nowhere that Casey discovered the abandoned truck in the wood. „Oh,“ he yelled, making Zeke wince. „Stop! Stop!! That's so compelling. I need to take some pictures.“
Inwardly grinning, Zeke obeyed. He was used to that; Casey was a photo geek, and whenever he spotted an interesting object, he wouldn't stop before the film was used up.
Casey stormed forward with the camera in his hands while Zeke leaned against his GTO, litting a cigarette. It was fun to watch the boy making the strangest contorted movements to take photos of rusty hub caps and cracked spotlights for some minutes. Until he finally put down the camera and tried to pull the driver's door open.
In vain. Casey turned back to Zeke, her eyes sparkling excitedly. „Can you help me? It's stuck.“
Zeke stubbed out the cigarette when he suddenly felt it. The air got cold, dump, though the sun was still shining. His gut tied up into knots, his mind was crying: alarm, alarm, alarm. He stiffened in every movement, remembering the day he had felt like this before. Back then, he had ignored it.
„Case!“ His voice was rough. „We should better go now.“
Surprised, the boy looked at him. „Hm? But I want to take a look inside the car. There are some more exciting details which will make an asset to my photo collage.“
„Please. We should be out here before it gets dark.“ The tension increased.
„That's ridiculous.“ Casey shook his head. „Since when you are afraid of the dark?“
„This place is...“ Zeke shrugged, unsure how to explain his feelings. „... kinda strange. Don't you feel it?“
„Strange feeling?“ Grinning, Casey turned back to the car. „Can it be that you did watch too many paranormal movies lately? Since when do you believe in ghost stories?“
„I didn't believe in alien stories, either.“ Zeke's voice was almost a whisper now as if he was afraid that someone might be listening. „But even if no one else seems to remember anymore, we both know what is happened in this night.“
The grin vanished from Casey's lips; he put the camera back into his backpack with shaking hands. „Okay, let split,“ he finally agreed.
When Zeke hit the pedal to the metal, he couldn't help it but throw a last glance at the old truck. He shuddered; for a split of a second, there seemed to be a faint shimmer in the inside, like a living fog, reaching out for them.
